In Centre County, those in charge of the county’s recycling program are stressing that the recyclable items collected are not being dumped in landfills.
Officials are also sharing the news of a new tool to help customers better determine what they can recycle, and where they can drop it off.
Recycling in Centre County is big business and it is leading to more questions about what exactly can be recycled.
“We get about 1,200 calls a month. What can we recycle, where can we recycle it?”
Now, the county’s recycling and refuse authority has unveiled a new app to help answer those questions.
“The recycling coach app works pretty easy. Let’s say you’re wondering if something like yogurt containers can be recycled. There will be a picture of the item you’ve picked, scroll down and it will show you if we take it, or if we don’t.”
The new app also has other related recycling information.
The recycling program in Centre County has steadily grown over the years and the priority remains to detour the tons of materials coming in and out of landfills.
“If it is an item on our accepted list, we take it, we bale it and sell it for recycling.”
