Somerset County Sheriff Found Not Guilty

After hours of deliberations, a jury has found Somerset County Sheriff Dusty Weir not guilty in his corruption of minors trial.

It took close to four-and-a-half hours and three questions to the judge for the jury to reach the decision on Wednesday.

Prior to the verdict being read, the judge warned the courtroom about an outburst, but the crowd reportedly cheered anyway.

Weir’s accuser was visibly upset and crying after the verdict was read.

Earlier Wednesday, a witness testified that he did not hear Weir make any sexual comments to the accuser which was the basis of the allegation.

The defense claimed the allegations were motivated by the termination of the accuser’s mother who previously worked for the sheriff’s office.

Throughout the week, the prosecution fought back against that claim and argued that inappropriate comments were made.

Prosecutors argued that, based on testimony from the accuser and her mother, Weir should be held accountable.

Ultimately, the jury acquitted Weir of the charge who continues to serve as Somerset County Sheriff.
