SCI Somerset Inmate Trial Date Set

According to acting Somerset County District Attorney Molly Metzgar, a trial date has been tentatively set for the case of a Somerset County inmate accused of attacking and killing a corrections officer in 2018.

Paul Kendrick, now age 27, is accused of attacking 61-year-old Sgt. Mark J. Baserman in February 2018 inside SCI Somerset.

After being delayed several times, authorities say President Judge Gregory Geary scheduled the trial to begin on May 8, 2023.

“I am excited to finally have a date and get the trial underway in order to deliver justice to the Baserman family. Since I have taken over the office, we have received defense continuance requests every term. This case is a priority for the office and we plan to dedicate all resources to it. We have kept in touch with the family, providing regular updates,”

Authorities say Kendrick allegedly punched Baserman repeatedly, and kicked him in the head, after Baserman took a towel from Kendrick because it was blocking the view of his bunk.

Kendrick’s legal team previously filed a motion to have the trial moved out of Somerset County, claiming that its “high-profile” nature would prevent their client from receiving a fair trial.
