Somerset County Flooding

I’m here in Somerset County where emergency officials held a press conference just hours ago. They tell us that as of tonight, over a dozen roads have been closed throughout the county and two emergency shelters have been opened up due to weather conditions.

Since the rain began this afternoon, the weather has still not let up, with officials predicting at least another quarter inch of rain throughout the night and another potential storm front later this week.

Take a look. This is what community members in Meyersdale experienced today. Between flooded roads, vehicles stuck in several feet of water, and dozens of basements needing pumped, both residents and emergency officials have been managing many issues.

While residents and officials tell us that the area typically experiences flooding and heavy rain this time each year, many people that I spoke with told me that this was the worst they’ve seen it in the last 30 years.

An evacuation notice has also been put into place for residents in the lower lying areas of Meyersdale. For those in need, overnight shelters are available at the Meyersdale community center and the Meyersdale senior center.

Now, emergency officials tell us they’re already planning for damage assessment across the county tomorrow morning.

If your home has experienced any damage, officials say you can fill out a disaster intake form on the Somerset County Emergency Management website or call 814-445-1515
