A Johnstown man who admitted to shooting another man in the stomach during a confrontation in the city’s Moxham neighborhood has been sentenced to a decade in state prison.
The Cambria County District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday that Terrell Dykes, 34, was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in a state correctional institution by Cambria County Judge Forrest B. Fordham III. Prosecutors said the sentence was the statutory maximum and exceeded the standard sentencing guideline range.
The sentence stems from a May 7, 2025, shooting on Village Street in Johnstown’s Moxham neighborhood.
According to prosecutors, Dykes pleaded guilty on April 1, 2026, to aggravated assault and persons not to possess a firearm, admitting that he shot the victim in the stomach after confronting him on the sidewalk. He also admitted he illegally possessed the firearm because of prior felony convictions.
Authorities said the victim was walking home from a Central Avenue business when Dykes confronted him over what police described as a monetary dispute.
According to the affidavit, Dykes asked the victim about “his money” before pulling out a handgun and shooting him in the stomach. The victim was able to flee while calling 911 and met police and EMS near the intersection of Coleman Avenue and Ohio Street before being taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Police later located Dykes as he was beginning his workday at a Kernville area business in Johnstown.
Investigators said Dykes admitted to confronting and shooting the victim before discarding the gun and reporting to work.
