Fayette Street Fire Update

A deadly fire claiming the life of one person in Cambria County

Is leaving a Westmont family and the entire community shocked as officials investigate.

Stoker Wieczore heard from loved ones who knew the victim.

“One minute, you heard them yelling, and the next the windows were exploding, and fire was pouring out. It was really quick.”

That’s what one neighbor Michael Guffrey says he heard and saw outside his home early Wednesday morning.

Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees says one person died in this house and five others were transported to the hospital.

Lees says the fire broke out this morning around 2:30 right here on Fayette Street. Multiple fire departments from both Cambria and Somerset Counties were on scene as well as other emergency response crews.

Officials say the body of the victim was found on the bottom floor.

Guffrey says he developed a positive relationship with the people affected. He says he remembers the victim as a happy and kind person.

“He was very outgoing. Every time I saw him, he had a smile on his face. He always stopped to say hi, even if he was in a rush.”

“He was going to school last I heard he was going to join the Navy.”

Loved ones told me about how they know the victim and family, off camera. They, and Guffrey reflect on the situation.

“I feel for the family, and if they need anything, they know they can come to us. They’ve done so much for us.”
