Whipple Dam Reopens

In Huntingdon County, the Whipple Dam State Park is reopening following the completion of a dredging project.

According to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the park reopened Friday after having been closed since September 2019.

Officials say 40,000 cubic yards of sediment was removed from the lake bed.

The department also repaved all the paved surfaces in the park and restored several fish habitat structures and turtle platforms.

They also added a wheelchair-accessible fishing pier and ramp at the beach.

“We’re here to maintain these places, and we’re fortunate enough that, we have the role of taking care of them for the people visiting them now and for future generations, said Whipple Dam State Park Manager Michael Dinsmore. ‚ÄúThis lake will be better for recreation and ecology for generations to come.”

Dinsmore says state parks across the commonwealth saw in increase in attendance during the pandemic.
