Westmont School District Hires School Officer

The school police officer position at Westmont Hilltop has been filled after being open for more than a year.

The Westmont Hilltop School Board called for a special meeting Monday night where the board unanimously approved the hiring of officer Karissa Grossman, pending approval by the Court of Common Pleas of Cambria County.

She’s scheduled to start at the end of the month, pending solicitor review and judicial approval.

The hire comes as district parents and community members have expressed that more needs to happen, including the hiring of police or resource officers for both the junior and senior high school, and the elementary school, after investigators said in December they thwarted a school shooting plot at the high school that was in the “planning phases” at the time.

The two teens, Preston Hinebaugh and Logan Pringle, are now awaiting trial on multiple felony charges.

Westmont Hilltop School Board President Robert Gleason said the school board approved a school police officer position in Dec. 2020 that would work at both schools, but to this point, had a hard time finding one.

He said they are satisfied with hiring only one officer that will be used at both schools.
