A jury has found Shakir Smith guilty of solicitation of murder and as an accomplice to first degree murder in the death of Carol Ashcom in 2015.
Court officials say it took the jury less than an hour to deliver a verdict.
The defense called four witnesses to the stand on Wednesday, including Smith.
Smith testified that although there were hundreds of letters he wrote to his friends and family from jail, he says there were no direct instructions to anyone outside of jail to commit crimes for him.
Smith explained he did feel betrayed when he found out Ashcom was his confidential informant who put him in jail for drug charges in 2014, but Smith insists he never ordered anyone to kill Ashcom.
