SCI Somerset Inmate Dies of COVID-19

SCI Somerset reported its first COVID-19 death of an inmate Friday.

The 73-year-old man had been at the facility since Oct. 1 and died Thursday at a local hospital.

The Department of Corrections did not identify the inmate, but said he had been serving one-and-a-half to six years for indecent assault of a juvenile.

According to the DOC website Friday, there are 149 active inmate cases and 48 active staff cases at SCI Somerset.

“We continue our battle against this dangerous invisible enemy,” Corrections Secretary John Wetzel said. “With fall upon us, we are experiencing a resurgence. That is why it is vital to continue our aggressive mitigation efforts. We cannot let our guard down.”

DOC officials add that a Council on Criminal Justice December 2020 report shows PA DOC as being one of six states with fewer deaths than expected given statewide rates.
