Rt. 219 to be Closed

PennDOT officials announced a detour in Meyersdale Borough due to “building concerns” near the road.

They say the detour will be placed along Route 2047, a road also known as Grant Street or Business 219.

Officials say Grant Street will be closed between Summit Street and Second Avenue “to ensure the safety of the traveling public,” according to a press release.

According to PennDOT’s release sent out Wednesday, officials said the detour would start at 9:00 Thursday morning, but later officials said it would take place around 5:00 Thursday evening.

“There is a detour placed that will utilize Route 219. The detour will be in place until the situation with the building along that section of roadway is resolved,” said Tara Callahan-Henry, District 9 Press Officer with PennDOT.

Jeff Irwin, the President of Meyersdale Borough Council, says the building — which is at 622 Grant Street — is vacant and in a dilapidated state, with the top of the structure failing and continuing to get worse.

He says the council was notified about the building about a year ago by the Emergency Management Coordinator, code enforcement, and many other local officials bringing it to their attention.

The owner of this vacant building also owns a neighboring property at 618 Grant Street, with tenants renting it out.

Irwin says he reached an agreement with the owner of the buildings to acquire both properties and have them torn down, but they’re at a standstill until the tenants move out of 618.
