PSU Fundraisers

Another record breaking weekend for Penn State’s Thon, as the weekend’s big dance raised more than $13 million dollars to help kids battling cancer.

There’s another Penn State fundraiser that’s been going on for years, and is now in its final phase.

Over the years, Penn State has held a series of University wide fund raising campaigns. The first dates back one hundred years, in the 1920’s, raising two million dollars for campus construction.

In the 1980’s, the campaign for Penn State brought in $300 million dollars.

Now, after six years, the latest fund raising effort, a greater Penn State for the 21st Century will wrap up officially in a few months with the $2.1 billion dollar goal in sight.

Over the years, the University’s strategic plans guided allocating the money raised.

As Penn State President Eric Barron told the University trustees last week, now its much more than raising money for new buildings on campus

“They want this University to do big things. they want to see innovation. They want us to address issues like food security or energy security, and so you see from both our
alumni and friends and corporations, a tremendous interest”

Penn State officials say Thon weekends over the years have been significant in boosting on-line donations to the larger University fund raising campaigns.
