New York City Homicide Suspect Hires New Lawyer

The man accused of shooting and killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson could be headed back to New York, after his arrest in Altoona last week.

That’s what officials are saying about Luigi Mangione after he originally was fighting against the extradition.

Reporter Brock Owens has the latest in the case

Luigi Mangione is still being held in Pennsylvania for now, but the key to that is for now.

It now seems increasingly likely Mangione could be extradited this week.

Altoona based Attorney Thomas Dickey originally representing Mangione.

Officials say on Friday multiple attorney’s visited Mangione at SCI Huntingdon where he’s being held including Dickey and attorney’s from New York.

Mangione has since retained Karen Friedman Agnifilo as his defense who’s a former Chief Assistant in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office which is the offce prosecuting the case.

The well known New York lawyer did an interview about the case with CNN last week before being retained by Mangione.

During the interview Agnifilo says quote:

“It looks to me that there might be a not guilty by reason of insanity defense that they’re going to be thinking about because the evidence is going to be so overwhelming that he did what he did.”

Also since Agnifilo was brought onto the case Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has stated that Mangione may waive his extradition that he was previously challenging.

So far officials with the Pennsylvania Court have not confirmed an extradition hearing has been scheduled but it could be as early as Tuesday according to Bragg.

Mangione still does have two hearings scheduled here in Blair County on December 23rd and 30th for a preliminary hearing and bail hearing.

I’ve reached out to several officials including Thomas Dickey and Blair County District Attorney Pete Weeks for more on the case and its future but have not heard back.
