State College Police are investigating the Vandalism of the Martin Luther King Junior Memorial as a Hate Crime. Borough Officials say the name and logo of a white supremacist group called ‘Patriot Front’ was graffitied on one of the murals last week.
A Public Works Crew has since cleaned up the mural, but Officials say this was not the first time that group’s logo and name showed up. In January, about 30 of the group’s stickers were posted throughout Downtown State College, and 24 hours later a pride mural in Bellefonte was spray painted with the group’s logo.
State College Communications Specialist Douglas Shontz helped organize the MLK Plaza’s Grand Opening back in 2017 and says he wanted it to be a safe space for community members and that he is sad to see the vandalism.
State College Police tweeted a picture of persons of interest. They are offering up to $1,000 to anyone with information that leads to an arrest.
