Local Pharmacist Sentenced

A well-known Johnstown pharmacist plead guilty on Thursday and was sentenced for unlawfully distributing painkillers, according to a release from the Department of Justice.

Federal officials say 57-year-old Joseph Martella, the owner of Martella’s Pharmacy, was sentenced to six months probation and a $3,000 fine for illegally distributing narcotics.

Authorities say between 2013 and 2016, Martella, who is a licensed pharmacist, dispensed oxycodone, morphine sulfate and hydrocodone to an individual and that the prescriptions were “not issued for legitimate medical purposes.”

Officials add that Martella previously agreed, in a deal with the DEA, to not dispense Schedule II or III narcotics, drugs or substances that have a high potential for abuse, for a period of three years and that Martella’s Pharmacy would pay a civil settlement of $300,000 and follow regulatory and reporting requirements established by the DEA.

Martella also had his license suspended, in 2018, following the initial indictment.
