Celebrating New Year’s Eve looks very different this year because of the pandemic. But an event in Johnstown is still celebrating the end of 2020 in a safe manner.
The annual Celebration Johnstown event brings people downtown to celebrate the start of the new year with live music and fireworks. This year because of COVID-19, the event will be held virtually on multiple platforms.
“Although pausing for the year is not horrible, is there a way we could re-imagine, and could we do this virtually? And so, it all just fell together beautifully,” said Celebration Johnstown co-chair, Lauren Lazzari.
Celebration Johnstown which typically has several musical acts throughout downtown can now be enjoyed from the comfort and safety of your own home.
“Some of our musicians have already recording socially distance videos and have that set up. Some of our events won’t lend to that online but could we just go to some that could possibly do some programming and volunteer that they could share on New Year’s Eve,” said Lazzari.
One part of the evening which isn’t changing: the fireworks. People will be able to watch the fireworks downtown at 9pm while staying socially distant or through a livestream on social media.
“I think this has been a great year just to re-imagine things and that’s what we’ve done. So no, it’s not a great idea to get together indoors but you can get together virtually and see really great performances online,” said Lazzari.
