High School Football Continues

Football Season is finally here. A number of College Teams started their Seasons Saturday, the NFL kicked off earlier this week and the High School Season began Friday night. We had 2 matinee High School games in the area on Saturday.

We’ll start it off with the Somerset Eagles visiting the Hilltoppers of Westmont Hilltop. To Price Field we go, no fans in the stands for this one, but a few were along the exterior of the field. We pick this one up in 2nd half: Somerset up 6-0 after a TD and missed extra point. Westmont’s Hudson Holbay takes the handoff and it’s a fumble, but it goes out of bounds. Westmont keeps the ball. A few plays later, Madox Muto plows his way up the middle and he’s gone for the 14 yard TD. The celebration is on as the Hilltoppers go up 7-6 in this low scoring afair. Somerset trying to catch up, William Reeping catches the pass on the slant route, but he’s met by a wall of Hilltoppers and coughs it up. A scramble for the ball and Felice Panebianco is the one who comes up with it for Westmont. Somerset holds and gets a late drive, setting up Ian Lasure for a short Field Goal try with 9 seconds to go, but it’s no good. The kicking game costing the Eagles as the Hilltoppers hold on at home 7-6.

Conemaugh Valley’s Football program is beginning a new chapter. They were forced to forfeit a number of games last Season because they didn’t have enough players, but they’ve joined forces with Ferndale to form a co-op team. The new Blue Jays squad taking on the North Star Cougars on Saturday. Early in the first, CV punting, but it’s a fake. Logan Kent trying to make some moves for a first down but can’t advance it past the sticks – a turnover on downs. North Star not able to do anything with it though. Pick it up with the first play of the 2nd Quarter, here’s Logan Kent again, but this time he finds a crease and they’re not gonna catch him. 55 Yards to paydirt puts CV on the board 7-0. In the next drive, North Star’s Carter Weible loses the pigksin and Ben Vuckovich recovers for CV. Conemaugh Valley would go on to blow out North Star 41-0.
