Jimmy Carter, he was best known as part of the family.

But starting in 1978 Carter visited a farm in the small town dozens of times according to Wayne Harpster who says Carter was a good friend of his.

“He came dozens and dozens of times here. He loved it here.”

Harpster says those visits made Carter part of the family and he says they weren’t just close friends they were buddies.

Harpster says he met Carter two years after his dad died. Harpster says he was close with his dad who he would hunt and fish with just like he ended up doing with Jimmy Carter.

“It was good for me my big brother.”

He says he thinks a lot about why they got along so well but still doesn’t fully understand.

“I’m just a farmer and here I am with the President of the United States as my buddy.”

And the 87 year old man adds that he wants to live to 100 years old just like his buddy.

“It’s hard on me but I’m going to live a few more years to enjoy those memories.”
