Fairness in Womens Sports Bill

The Senate Education Committee has advanced a measure to establish the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act that would prevent transgender girls and women from competing in women’s sports here in Pennsylvania, according to Senators Judy Ward and Kristen Phillips Hill, who sponsored House Bill 972.

The act would restrict players to male or female teams based on their reproductive organs, biology or genetics at birth, and give students a route to sue if they feel harmed by violations of that rule.

The bill would also prohibit a government entity or athletic league or an athletic organization from considering a complaint, opening an investigation or taking adverse action against a school entity or public institution of higher education for maintaining separate teams or sports for students of the female sex.

The league’s decisions about transgender athletes to their schools principals. The bill is now moving to the full Senate for consideration.

However, Governor Wolf has vowed to veto the bill if it reaches his desk.
