Consumer Protection: Hearing Aids

According to the National Institutes of Health, one in eight people aged twelve years and older in the U.S. has hearing loss in both ears. Although, it’s estimated that 29 million adults could benefit from hearing aids, only 30% of adults over 70 and 16% of adults between the ages of 20 and 69 have ever used them. Why? One of the main reasons is cost – an average pair of hearing aids can cost $5000! Before considering this kind of investment, you need to know your rights and be on the lookout for scams, fraud, and deceptive practices. Michelle Nutter from the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General joins us with more information.

If you feel you’ve been scammed or your rights were violated, contact the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection to file a complaint.  You can reach the office at 1-800-441-2555; by emailing scams@attorneygeneral.gov; or by filing a complaint online at www.attorneygeneral.gov
