The Windber Police Department will once again be collecting toys, money and other items to distribute to members of the community for Christmas.
They’ve been doing this for the past 22 years as part of their Christmas for the kids.
Chief Andrew Freer says last year they provided toys, food and gift cards for 150 families and more than 300 children.
“The department usually raises around $20,000 to have its Christmas party for the families.”
And even with ongoing concerns of COVID 19, Freer says the tradition will continue on December 16th.
“We had people come to the community building. They just basically walked through and picked up their stuff for the kids and took it with them and took some other stuff that we had there that they were able to get.We weren’t able to have the large parties, and we’re not going to do that again this year. It’s just going to be the same way they’ll pull up, walk through, get their stuff and go out the other door and they’ll have limited contact with everybody.”
He says the community has been extremely generous over the years, and if you would like to donate to the Windber Police Department for its Christmas for the kids, you can mail items or money to 1301 Jefferson Avenue, Windber 15963 or you can stop by the hall.
