The highly anticipated COVID-19 vaccine is beginning to arrive at hospitals in our region.
Thursday afternoon, the first round of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccines were delivered to Chan Soon Shiong Medical Center in Windber. Starting tomorrow, healthcare workers will begin receiving the vaccine.
The long awaited COVID-19 vaccine has made its way to Somerset County. The Pfizer vaccine was delivered to Chan Soon Shiong Medical Center in Windber after a long commute from Philadelphia.
“This is absolutely fantastic we are able to do that. The staff is excited. Being on the front lines and caring for people who are critically ill, this is a really good thing,” said Chan Soon Shiong’s chief medical officer, Dr. David Csikos.
Dr. Csikos has been working in medicine for over 40 years. He believes this vaccine could be the beginning of the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. At this time, the vaccine is not mandatory for employees, but it is strongly recommended.
“Well, I think because there are some unknowns about the vaccine. However, the clinical trials have shown them to be both safe and effective. But again, respectful of individuals decision making concerning the vaccine not to make it mandatory,” said Dr. Csikos.
Dr. Csikos is one of the many healthcare workers who will be receiving the vaccine Friday. He is urging others to follow suit.
“The vaccine is safe. And it’s effective and I strongly encourage anyone who is eligible to get the vaccine when it is offered. And I can’t stress that enough,” said Dr. Csikos.
