Bedford County Man Arrested On Animal Cruelty Charges

State police in Bedford County say an Everett man is jailed on over 100 counts of animal cruelty-related charges after approximately three dozen cats were found living in deplorable conditions.

Troopers say 40-year-old Matthew Calhoun surrendered 34 cats last week following an investigation at a residence in West Providence Township.

According to the affidavit, troopers were called to Calhoun’s Wilkins Road home last Thursday after CYS reported a “large amount of cats living in abhorrent conditions.”

Investigators say the home was littered with urine and feces, and overall general filth.

Police say they also found that the cats had no access to food or water.

On Friday, Jan. 3rd, troopers say Calhoun agreed to surrender the cats to the local humane society.

Police say that during a follow-up visit this week, troopers discovered three more cats at the home.

The investigating trooper noted in the affidavit that Calhoun’s residence was the “most bio hazardous residence” that he had ever encountered.

According to online court records, Calhoun was arraigned Tuesday afternoon on 111 total counts, including dozens of counts of felony aggravated cruelty to animals and animal neglect
