And those warming shelters along with others across the area continue to bring in those looking for a warm place to stay
Reporter Brock Owens spoke with people saying they may not have had anywhere else to go during this cold.
I spoke with a few people saying they’re homeless.
Everyone’s story is a little different for how they’re navigating the cold weather
But they all know they need to try getting inside as much as possible.
As the extremely cold temperatures continue around the area. Some are seeking shelter throughout the day.
“Man them temperatures is below zero. Like it’s cold. It’s so cold that your fingertips feel like they’re going to fall off. And it’s just all around too cold for people to be out there.”
I spoke with several people who say they’re homeless on Tuesday at the Salvation Army in Altoona.
One gives tips on staying warm.
“I stay bundled up, I stay in warm areas, I eat soup.”
Those seeking shelter tell me they are going anywhere they can to stay inside.
“I go to the Library and then I listen to music for a while, then I come here for lunch and I hang out for a little while, and I go back to the Library
Many gather at the warming stations in the area.
“That’s helpful for somebody that’s in my situation, homeless, or whatever the case may be, they provide you food, shelter, clothes, a nice, hot shower when you need it.”
But when night comes and the temperatures drop even further people seeking shelter look for a place to stay even
“My ex-girlfriend’s mothers’ place.”
Nobody I spoke with has been stuck outside all night through the cold streak but say they know people who have.
“Yeah, I have a friend. The ones that aren’t inside, those are the ones that you have to worry about the most. Some of us, we get stuck out there. We don’t mean to, but you get there late, passed time, you’re stuck outside and it’s cold out.”
While those I spoke with say they’re thankful for the resources being offered to them, they add that they wish there were more warming shelters and places to stay.
