2022 Special Olympics Pennsylvania Summer Games

The 2022 Special Olympics Pennsylvania Summer Games kicked off Yesterday on Penn State’s Campus in Centre County.

Opening ceremonies were held at the Pegula Ice Arena this evening following preliminary competitions earlier in the day.

This is the first time in 3 years the event has been held since 2019…on account of the pandemic.

Though Centre County recently moved back into the CDC’s high category for Covid transmission, event officials say they’re doing everything possible to protect the athletes.

“Front and center of our minds is the health and safety of our athletes but part of that is getting them out from the sedentary lifestyles of being inside and not being active, so being out here participating is just as part of the
equation. 90% of our athletes here this weekend are vaccinated, so that gives us a little more confidence.”

The competition will conclude on Saturday with award ceremonies for each sport.
