Title:Che Malambo
Description:Eisenhower Auditorium - March 15, 2018 Tickets available at cpa.psu.edu or 814-863-0255 Che Malambo, a powerhouse all-male Argentinian dance company, excites audiences with its percussive dance and music spectacle. Malambo is a dynamic blend of precision footwork, rhythmic stomping, drumming, and song that originated in the seventeenth century in the South American pampas (lowland plains). It evolved from competitive duels among Argentine gauchos (South American cowboys) that tested agility, strength, and dexterity. It soon came to include what is now its hallmark, zapeteo, a fast-paced footwork inspired by the rhythm of galloping horses. Malambo also features the drumming of traditional Argentine bombos and whirling boleadoras (throwing weapons made of intertwined cords and weighted with stones). Che Malambo, born from the heart of the gaucho tradition, is now thrilling audiences around the world with a new production created by director and choreographer Gilles Brinas.

Description:Eisenhower Auditorium - March 20, 2018 Tickets available at cpa.psu.edu or 814-863-2055 The National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba, which has been pivotal in introducing music of its homeland to international audiences, will make its Penn State premiere in a Latin-flavored and dance-inspired program featuring Maurice Ravel’s Bolero — plus works by Manuel De Falla, Carlos Fariñas, and Amadeo Roldán. Yekwon Sunwoo, gold-medal winner of the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will perform Sergei Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43, as featured soloist with the orchestra. Sunwoo, the first South Korean to win the prestigious competition, is a graduate of Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music. “The National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba can play symphonies by Beethoven and Mendelssohn, and play them well,” writes a reviewer for the Tampa Bay Times. “But what is special is when the musicians make like a big dance band from the Tropicana, the legendary nightclub in Havana, and play classical music with an Afro-Cuban beat.” Founded in 1960, the orchestra covers an immense symphonic and chamber repertoire ranging from Baroque to contemporary music. The ensemble has toured to the United States, Russia, Poland, Spain, Mexico, Argentina, and other countries. Music Director Enrique Pérez Mesa, a native of Cuba and a graduate of its National School of Arts, has led performances in leading concert halls on three continents. The Grammy Award nominee has also recorded music for Cuban and Spanish films. Mr. Sunwoo appears by arrangement with the Cliburn.

Danish String Quartet
Dates:Friday, April 06, 2018
Title:Danish String Quartet
Description:Schwab Auditorium, April 6, 2018 at 7:30 pm Tickets available at cpa.psu.edu or 814-863-0255 In the 1990s, as children, three of them met at a summer music camp in the Danish countryside. The youngest students in attendance, they soon became friends and continued to get together to play music in the years that followed. Two decades later, these Scandinavian string players — three Danes and a Norwegian who joined the mix in 2008 — constitute “one of the best quartets before the public today” (Washington Post). In its Penn State debut, the Danish String Quartet — violinists Frederik Øland and Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen, violist Asbjørn Nørgaard, and cellist Fredrik Schøyen Sjölin — will perform Béla Bartók’s String Quartet No. 1; Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 7, Op. 59, No. 1; and a selection of Nordic folk tunes from the ensemble’s albums Wood Works (2014) and Last Leaf (2017). “In the talented hands of the Danish String Quartet these ‘Wood Works’ — traditional Nordic folksongs and dances — are buffed and polished to a glossy concert-hall sheen,” writes a Gramophone reviewer. Winner of the London (now Wigmore Hall) International String Quartet Competition in 2009, the ensemble has earned a reputation for its integrated sound, impeccable intonation, judicious balance, and “rampaging energy” (The New Yorker). The quartet’s ECM Records debut, Adès/Nørgård/Abrahamsen (2016), earned a five-star rating from a reviewer for The Guardian, who praises the album as “an exacting program requiring grace, grit, and clarity.” “Do not lose track of this group,” writes a Boston Globe critic. “Even by today’s high standards, it offers something very special.” Artistic Viewpoints will not be offered before this performance.

The result is a visually stunning spectacle that transcends cultural barriers and sparks the imagination. The company’s new creation, you & me, brings to life the large-scale masks audiences have grown to love, plus a revival of a tradition of acrobatics. The show will feature some of the classic sketches that have stood the test of time, and will focus on the love and mutual joy the audiences and the performers experience. “MUMMENSCHANZ succeeds brilliantly because of its originality, exceptional ingenuity, sense of surprise, and deft satirical touches,” writes a reviewer for the San Francisco Chronicle. “The sound is the audience that laughs, that sighs, that whispers, that makes comments. It’s like a cartoon coming alive in front of you,” says MUMMENSCHANZ founder Floriana Frassetto. “you & me is the intimacy we go into.
