| Straight No Chaser | | Dates: | Friday, November 11, 2016 | Title: | Straight No Chaser | Description: | If the phrase “male a cappella group” conjures images of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses, think again. Straight No Chaser isn’t straightlaced, straight-faced, or vaudeville-style kitsch. The group has emerged as a phenomenon with a massive fan following, numerous national television appearances, and proven success with CD releases.
The I’ll Have Another tour comes to Penn State in celebration of the group’s twentieth anniversary. Straight No Chaser is the real deal, the captivating sound of ten unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that moves people in a fundamental sense—and with a sense of humor.
The tour follows Straight No Chaser’s most recent album, 2015’s The New Old Fashioned, in which the group lends its inimitable vocal style to contemporary standards including The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face,” Hozier’s “Take Me to Church,” Radiohead’s “Creep,” and Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love.” The album also features some of the group’s incomparable medleys, such as “Beggin’/Counting Stars,” blending favorites by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons and OneRepublic, and “On the Road Again/Play the Road,” by Willie Nelson and Zac Brown Band, respectively. And speaking of being on the road, Straight No Chaser has built a reputation as an unforgettable live act.

ALTOONA – IU8 will host eight high school teams from across the region who will showcase how they used STEM to design a device or project that is capable of “Making Our Lives Better Through STEM,” which is the theme of this year’s competition.
The regional competition will take place on Tuesday, February 7 from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at IU8 located at 4500 Sixth Avenue, Altoona. The challenge will test teams’ communication, problem solving, and critical thinking skills while providing a unique opportunity to share their creativity with students from across the state.
The winning team from IU8’s regional competition will compete at the state level at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology on May 19, 2017. Regional competitions will be held at each of the Commonwealth’s Intermediate Units (IU) during the month of February at a date and time identified by each IU. Balé Folclórico de Bahia’s high-energy presentation includes authentic folk dances and music from the three major cultural influences on the Brazilian people: Portuguese, which arrived with sixteenth-century colonization; African, introduced through slavery; and the indigenous traditions of native Brazilians.
Formed in 1988 by Walson Botelho and Ninho Reis in Salvador, the capital of the state of Bahia, Balé Folclórico da Bahia is the only professional folk dance company in Brazil. The troupe, guided by Artistic Director José Carlos Arandiba, has earned international acclaim with tours to several continents. The company’s visit to Penn State is part of its eighth North American tour.
The company performs in traditional clothing that occasionally reveals partial nudity. Applies to the evening performance only.

About the speakers:
Anita Brattina—PowerLink CEO and Chairman of the Board
Anita Brattina has founded and built three businesses. In her 30-year career as an entrepreneur, she grew her first business (a marketing company) and sold it in 2002. She built her second business (an energy efficiency consulting firm) from scratch in 2009, and grew it to $4 million in four years before selling to her partners in 2013. She is currently sole shareholder of AllFacilities, Inc., a facilities management marketing firm that works with manufacturers, service companies, and energy providers who offer building services and solutions to commercial, industrial, and institutional owners. Over the last 20 years, Ms. Brattina and her staff have planned, designed, and managed hundreds of business services programs for major corporations across the country.
Ms. Brattina recently purchased an additional business, RCx Building Diagnostics, one of the oldest energy audit companies in Pennsylvania that provides energy efficiency analytics for commercial building owners.
In 1992, Ms. Brattina received one of the two original PowerLink boards of advisors for her company and went on to serve on the PowerLink governing board as a member and an officer. For the last 20 years, she has offered free counseling to women entrepreneurs, and is a regular speaker and author on entrepreneurship and the power of outside advisors to help grow a company.
Karen Wright—PowerLink COO and Program Manager
Karen Wright ran the business of law firms for 12 years as a Principal Legal Administrator before co-founding a national TPA in 2002 that provided claims and litigation management to self-insured health care providers in the alternative risk transfer market. She sold the company in 2014 as a new division for a $115 million national TPA. As an organizational development executive with a proven track record in operations, Ms. Wright's passion is to effectively integrate improved business processes, and to enrich communication, accountability, and shared investment in the organization. She engages and aligns employees with the business strategic goals so they can take ownership and succeed as valued teammates and leaders. In 2016, she was recruited by PowerLink to compile and manage the data of hundreds of volunteer business advisors; develop written systems and procedures; and build teams and advisory panel leaders through the PowerLink Advisory Board program.

| Brooklyn Babylon | | Dates: | Tuesday, February 28, 2017 | Title: | Brooklyn Babylon | Description: | Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society is one of the most admired ensembles in contemporary jazz. The band has toured in Europe, Brazil, and North America; been featured twice at the Newport Jazz Festival; and topped the Big Band category in the 2015 DownBeat Critics Poll. Weaving progressive jazz, early-American popular styles, Balkan folk music, and the sounds of Brooklyn’s diverse contemporary music scene, Argue creates in the multimedia work Brooklyn Babylon an evocative musical narrative that’s at once timeless and unlike anything heard before.
Brooklyn Babylon was conceived in collaboration with Croatian-born visual artist Danijel Zezelj, whose narrative inspired Argue’s mash-up of musical styles. Zezelj’s artwork, created live on stage, places the action in a larger-than-life, mythic Brooklyn in which past, present, and future coexist. Plans are afoot to construct an immense tower—the tallest in the world—in the heart of the city. Lev Bezdomni, a master carpenter, finds himself torn between his personal ambition and his allegiance to the community when he is commissioned to build a carousel that will crown the skyscraper. It’s an urban fable about an artist torn between his ambition and his connection to the people of his neighborhood.
Live music, live painting, and projected animation combine to create a uniquely immersive experience that David Krasnow of public radio’s Studio 360 called “a masterpiece… a new work of originality, power, and beauty.”
Performers will also participate in a post-performance discussion with audience members.

| Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra | | Dates: | Thursday, March 02, 2017 | Title: | Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra | Description: | Hailed as “one of the world’s top Baroque orchestras” by a Gramophone critic, Tafelmusik returns with its latest multimedia work, J. S. Bach: The Circle of Creation. Tafelmusik is German for “table music” or “music for the feast.” It’s an apt moniker for Toronto’s Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, which has produced a feast of firsts and bests in the music world. The award-winning ensemble, created in 1979, performs historically informed musical experiences on period instruments. Through extensive tours, renowned recordings, television broadcasts, and new media initiatives, Tafelmusik is one of the most prolific orchestras on the planet. The orchestra’s independent music label, Tafelmusik Media, features new digital, live performance, and studio CD and DVD recordings. It also re-releases previous Tafelmusik recordings from Sony Classical and CBC Records.
“When the big names of the Baroque era composed their masterpieces 300 years ago, they must have dreamed about their hits sounding this good,” writes a reviewer for The Royal Gazette. “Tafelmusik was a time machine last night, sweeping the audience out of its seats and back to that magic period between 1650 and 1750.”
Tafelmusik performs its most recent creation by the orchestra’s double bassist Alison Mackay. Using text, music, and projected video and images, J. S. Bach: The Circle of Creation explores the world of the artisans—performers, papermakers, violin carvers, and string spinners—who aided Bach in realizing his genius. Tafelmusik musicians perform the all-Bach program from memory. Like its predecessors, House of Dreams and The Galileo Project: Music of the Spheres, which Tafelmusik performed at Penn State in 2013 and 2014, respectively, The Circle of Creation invigorates the concert experience. “In these hands,” writes a reviewer for The Globe and Mail of Toronto, “Bach’s music feels more alive than ever.”

The new work is a multimedia piece about people in their teens and twenties grappling with addiction, depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. When communication with their families has reached an impasse, these young people are sent to wilderness therapy programs. With pathos, humor, and irony, WILDERNESS shares the stories of six families, along with their therapists, on journeys to recovery. Documentary interviews on screens and a beautiful folk score accompany the actor-musicians on stage.
A New York Times critic calls WILDERNESS “a terrific, moving new multimedia theater piece.” A reviewer for The Village Voice describes the show as “a compassionate glimpse at the outer edge of teenage angst.”
WILDERNESS is a collaboration among writer-director Seth Bockley, co-adaptor and director of BASETRACK Live; writer Anne Hamburger; movement directors Devon De Mayo and Patrick McCollum; song composer Kyle Miller; and alternative folk composer Kyle Henderson, frontman of the band Desert Noises.

| A Year with Frog and Toad | | Dates: | Sunday, March 19, 2017 | Title: | A Year with Frog and Toad | Description: | The musical A Year with Frog and Toad, based on characters and events in a series of popular children’s books by Arnold Lobel, earned three Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, during its run on Broadway. Now, the show that follows two friends—the cheerful Frog and the grumpy Toad—tours America in a charming production that entertains youngsters and appeals to their parents and grandparents.
“Anyone who cherishes musical theatre and can beg or borrow a child from 4 up might be well advised to make a beeline … in search of tickets for A Year with Frog and Toad,” writes a New York Times reviewer.
A jazzy score with a country-and-western thread and clever lyrics keep fingers snapping and toes tapping. Scenic designer Adrianne Lobel, the author’s daughter, developed the musical. Robert Reale composed the music, while Willie Reale wrote the book and lyrics.

The Pennsylvania German Groundhog Lodges and Versammlinge
Presented by: William W. Donner, Department of Anthropology, Kutztown University
Sunday, March 26, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Centre Furnace Mansion.
In the 1930s, Pennsylvania Germans started Groundhog Lodges to provide a place for speaking and celebrating the German language and culture. There was singing, skits, and serious talks, often concerning the legendary ability of the groundhog to predict the weather, all done in the German Deitsch language. Over time, Versammlinge (“gatherings”) also developed in the state and adopted a similar format. William Donner, author of Serious Nonsense: Groundhog Lodges, Versammlinge and Pennsylvania German Heritage, will discuss the how the meetings celebrated tradition, and over time, became themselves a tradition.

| 2017 Child Abuse Prevention Month | | Dates: | Tuesday, April 04, 2017 | Title: | 2017 Child Abuse Prevention Month | Description: | April Is National Child Abuse Prevention & Awareness Month
A special Flag Raising Ceremony will be held at the Blair County Law Enforcement Memorial, Blair County Courthouse, on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at 12:00 PM (Noon) to recognize April as National Child Abuse Prevention & Awareness Month.
The Children’s Memorial Flag will be raised and flown during the month of April to increase the awareness of child abuse in our community. This Flag Raising Ceremony will also be the kickoff for Prevent Child Abuse America’s “Pinwheels for Prevention” Campaign. Blue and silver pinwheels will be “planted” in the garden in front of the Blair County Courthouse to serve as a reminder that everyone plays a part in protecting the smallest citizens of Blair County. The pinwheel is a symbol for the happy and carefree childhood that each child should have the opportunity to experience. A brief ceremony featuring children from the community and local speakers will follow the flag raising.
This month and throughout the year, Blair County Children, Youth & Families encourages all individuals and organizations to play a role in making Blair County a better place for families. By ensuring that parents have the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to care for their children, we can help prevent child abuse and neglect by strengthening families and communities.
Please plan to join us in this very important event and show your support for the prevention of child abuse.
Together we all can play a part in preventing child maltreatment and promoting well-being.

| Pennsylvania in Public Memory | | Dates: | Sunday, June 25, 2017 | Title: | Pennsylvania in Public Memory | Description: | 2017 Henszey-Pyle Author Series
Pennsylvania in Public Memory: Reclaiming the Industrial Past, a talk by author Dr. Carolyn Kitch.
“This is a fascinating book that will make a major original contribution to the overlapping fields of public history, deindustrialization, and tourism studies.” —Steven High, Concordia University, author of Industrial Sunset
What stories do we tell about America’s once-great industries at a time when they are fading from the landscape? Pennsylvania in Public Memory attempts to answer that question, exploring the emergence of a heritage culture of industry and its loss through the lens of its most representative industrial state. Based on news coverage, interviews, and more than two hundred heritage sites, this book traces the narrative themes that shape modern public memory of coal, steel, railroading, lumber, oil, and agriculture, and that collectively tell a story about national as well as local identity in a changing social and economic world.
This author series is underwritten by the Anne Hamilton Henszey Pyle and Kenneth B. Pyle Educational Fund for Regional Heritage Preservation.

| Cecile McLorin Salvant | | Dates: | Thursday, September 14, 2017 | Title: | Cecile McLorin Salvant | Description: | Cécile McLorin Salvant, whose For One to Love earned the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album, is “the finest jazz singer to emerge in the last decade,” writes a New York Times critic.
Wynton Marsalis is convinced of her greatness. “She has poise, elegance, soul, humor, sensuality, power, virtuosity, range, insight, intelligence, depth, and grace,” he says of the singer, who has been thrilling listeners across America and Europe since she won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition in 2010.
McLorin Salvant—who is fascinated by the history of American music and the connections among jazz, vaudeville, blues, and folk—meticulously selects her repertoire. She’s known for unearthing rarely recorded gems that tell powerful stories.
“I’ve never heard a singer of her generation who has such a command of styles ranging from Bessie Smith to Betty Carter,” says pianist and composer Aaron Diehl. “To have an artist with such a handle on jazz vocabulary while being extremely expressive and soulful, that’s very rare.”
She will perform with her band—piano, bass, and drums—in concert at Schwab Auditorium. | Times: | 7:30PM - 9:00PM | Link: | http://cpa.psu.edu/events/cecile-mclorin-salvant |

| Tri-Service POW/MIA Vigil | | Dates: | Friday, September 15, 2017 | Title: | Tri-Service POW/MIA Vigil | Description: | This event is held every year on the Old Main Lawn and it is the Tri-Service ROTC Prisoner of War and Missing in Action (POW/MIA) Vigil.
This event is hosted every year by Penn State’s chapter of the Arnold air society (AAS), better known as the Harry R. Armstrong Squadron. This is a professional, honorary, and service organization advocating the support of aerospace power. To give you a better understanding of the organization, the Arnold Air Society started at the University of Cincinnati in the year 1947 as an extracurricular for Cadets. The name "Arnold Air Society", was in honor of the Air Force's ONLY 5-Star General at the time, Henry "Hap" Arnold. The Arnold Air Society is affiliated with the Air Force Association (AFA), which is an Air Force magazine that informs and connects service members from all levels about what is going on in the community. That being said, the organization is very prestigious because it has high standards and values when it comes to volunteering and paying tribute to those who have served before us.
This background is important to know because it is what has molded Penn State’s chapter of the organization to do more for the community. Just last year, the POW/MIA Vigil lasted around 30-40 minutes. Basically, this event recognizes those veterans who fell victim to imprisonment during war and those who went missing without a trace in the line of action. In the past, there has been a missing man table with honor guard for 24 hours, as well as various speakers and even some performances by Air Force ROTC’s very own a capella group, "The Wild Blue Younders", (which I myself am a member). Having said that, let me make clear that this vigil is not only an Arnold Air Society effort, or an Air Force ROTC effort. It is a Tri-Service effort from all of the ROTC branches at Penn State. I am simply a Public Affairs officer trying to get the word out. Each year over 200 Cadets and Midshipmen have been in attendance in addition to all of those who paid tribute from the State College community. The event has turned out to be very successful in the last couple of years, but we could always use the help to make it better!
The Harry R. Armstrong Squadron has had help from Penn State’s Social Media Manager who scheduled various Tweets to raise awareness about the event. The squadron was also able to have a live “On Air” interview at The Lion 90.7 FM where they recording a public service announcement, which turned out to be very influential. These public affairs projects paired with a couple breathtaking newspaper articles seemed to have been the determining point in what basically allowed the community to realize what we were honoring through this event. Last year turned out to be an amazing vigil and I say that because not only did the community react in a positive way, the area and even the nation took notice. Granting the squadron awards for its POW/MIA Vigil, the Harry R. Armstrong Squadron received an area level award at the University of Virginia for its public affairs efforts in regards to the vigil and furthermore received a national level award at Disney World for “Best Support of a POW Awareness Program.”
We take great pride in this vigil because it means so much! It is a very humbling experience and we would like to share that with all that care to pay tribute. That being said, we would like to invite you to the vigil and furthermore, we would like to ask for your help by letting the community know about this award-winning event that honors those who are gone but never forgotten.
The Vigil will take place on September 15, 2017 at 4:00pm. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

| Cirque Italia | | Dates: | Thursday, September 28, 2017 - Sunday, October 01, 2017 | Title: | Cirque Italia | Description: | GET READY JOHNSTOWN, PA, BECAUSE YOU ARE ABOUT TO HAVE THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE! CIRQUE ITALIA, THE FIRST TRAVELING WATER CIRCUS IS COMING TO TOWN WITH A SPECTACULAR SHOW THAT YOU CAN’T MISS!
Cirque Italia has grown to the point where the next logical step can only be to expand operations and double our presence at the national level. In response to our wonderful fans all over the U.S., and with over 90% of shows being sold out, NOW is the perfect time for a substantial investment.
Beginning in 2017, Cirque Italia, the first traveling Water Circus, introduces a second unit, the Gold Unit: a luxurious experience where technology and preforming arts are mixed to create a one-of-a-kind show.
This new performance will feature an ultra-modern water curtain that controls every droplet of water meticulously. Cirque Italia is ready to provide a breathtaking experience. This new stage by itself is enough to amaze the most demanding audience, and synchronized with the most creative display of superhuman talent - the result is simply out of this world!
The latest trends of the industry are challenged with every Cirque Italia appearance and this 2nd unit is not going to be any different. A careful casting selection has united the best artists from all over the world. This production will feature acts all the way from Russia to Mexico. Cirque Italia believes in multi-culturalism as one of our strongest assets.
Packed full of incredible acts, there is no room for boredom. The variety presented is exceptional. For those who enjoy smart and well-thought out comedy, Alex the clown thrills while taking an acrobatic journey on the trampoline. Our Argentinian twin jugglers (with a Guinness World Record in their pockets) can handle all kinds of objects in the air, even fire! There is almost no bodily limit for our contortionist as she bends in ways you never would have imagined. She makes it seem so natural, you might end up trying it in yoga class.
Whether it’s a futuristic laser act or mesmerizing aerial performances, the show has something for all tastes and expectations. One thing Cirque Italia sets out to accomplish is to create a type of world-class entertainment suitable for all age groups.
This new second unit also follows the same strict animal-free policy that makes the Water Circus stand out from other circus entertainment shows.

The “magic touch” of the Italian entrepreneur Manuel Rebecchi, President and Owner of Cirque Italia, added to the flawless direction of the COO, Chanté DeMoustes, and has turned this once romantic project into a successful production known and acclaimed all over the country.

| Flip FabriQue: Catch Me! | | Dates: | Wednesday, October 11, 2017 | Title: | Flip FabriQue: Catch Me! | Description: |
Montreal, the fertile crescent of contemporary circus, has done it again. Flip FabriQue, the newest gravity-defying sensation from Quebec, will make its Center for the Performing Arts premiere in Catch Me!, a celebration of fun and friendship.
“The young members of Flip FabriQue claim to be French Canadian,” writes a New York Times critic, “but after watching them perform, you may suspect that they hail from a different planet. … This troupe offers acts that don’t seem humanly possible, like walking up a building face. … In a signature act, ‘Trampowall,’ members of the group place a trampoline in front of it, bounce forcefully on their backs to a great height and then, with the help of momentum and what must be terrific shoes, walk the remaining few steps up its surface to cavort on a rooflike shelf.”
Catch Me! finds friends coming together after a decade to spend a weekend at a country cottage. “For Flip FabriQue, the stage is a playground where high-level acrobatics and parkour are the natural vocabulary,” writes a reviewer for Scotland’s ThreeWeeksEdinburgh.com. “In a nonchalant way, with their casual clothes and childlike energy, these six performers show off incredible trick after incredible trick … . But it’s not just acrobatics; it’s their inventiveness and charisma. The show … opens the door to some sweet nostalgia, playfulness, and jokes that weave the acts together … .”
Flip FabriQue’s performers, a woman and five men, met while students at the Quebec Circus School. Catch Me! grew out of their reunion years later. Each of the artists is a veteran of Cirque du Soleil productions. Three also have been members of Center for the Performing Arts favorite Cirque Éloize.
“This is absolute world class circus craft. There is so much joie de vivre on stage you’ll walk out buzzing. An utterly phenomenal show,” raves a critic for EdinburghGuide.com.

| Lila Downs | | Dates: | Tuesday, October 17, 2017 | Title: | Lila Downs | Description: |
One of the world’s most singular voices, Lila Downs’ poignant storytelling goes beyond borders. Raised in Minnesota and Oaxaca, Mexico, the global superstar’s artistry bridges traditions from across the Americas. Winner of a Grammy and four Latin Grammys, Downs has been influenced by the folk and ranchera music of Mexico and South America, as well as North American folk, jazz, blues, and hip-hop. As a passionate human-rights activist, she often highlights issues in her lyrics that relate to social justice.
“The Mexican American singer has a stunning voice, a confident multicultural vision grounded in her Mixtec Indian roots,” writes a Los Angeles Times reviewer. “Ms. Downs has multiple voices, from an airborne near-falsetto down to a forthright alto and a sultry, emotive contralto,” adds a writer for The New York Times.
An NPR reporter describes Downs’ June 2017 release — Salón, Lágrimas y Deseo — as “a mix of traditional Mexican genres with a feminist beat.”
“On 2015’s Latin Grammy-winning Balas y Chocolat, Lila Downs delivered an album of folk songs and originals that juxtaposed modern Mexico with its rich history,” writes a reviewer for AllMusic.com. “Its songs highlighted the impact of the drug war, environmental devastation, and the widening rift between economic classes in Mexico. Downs believes an artist’s role is not only to create but to be an activist. Salón, Lágrimas y Deseo is in many ways an extension of Balas y Chocolat, though its emphasis is different. Here Downs employs classic and original songs to deliver a feminist manifesto … .”
Downs has performed at many of the world’s most prestigious festivals and venues, including Jazz at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Hollywood Bowl. She sang at the White House and on the telecast of the seventy-fifth Academy Awards.
“Fluency in Spanish isn’t necessary to understand Lila Downs’ shape-shifting voice,” writes a critic for the Associated Press. “It transcends language, carrying pure emotion. Downs moves from operatic stylings to rap and everything in between, with both artistic exploration and pop sensibility.”
Artistic Viewpoints will not be offered before this performance. Instead, plans are being made for an alternative that focuses on the singer's native Mexico and the many cultures within it.

| Cybersecurity for Small Businesses | | Dates: | Thursday, October 19, 2017 | Title: | Cybersecurity for Small Businesses | Description: | Cyber-attacks targeting businesses with fewer than 250 employees have steadily increased over the last five years, according to the cybersecurity firm Symantec. In 2015, 43 percent of all attacks targeted small businesses, up from 34 percent the previous year. Research by the National Cyber Security Alliance indicates that within six months of a cyber-attack, 60 percent of small companies go out of business. Cyber threats are becoming more difficult to anticipate and control just as businesses are becoming more dependent on digital resources such as the web, social media, and eCommerce. In addition, new frontiers, such as cloud computing and bring your own device (BYOD), increase complexity.
Increasing cybersecurity begins with an awareness that obscurity is no longer a feasible defense to advanced techniques, such as watering hole attacks, spear-phishing, and ransomware. This seminar will use case-based learning and scenarios to increase awareness of cybersecurity threats, as well as provide tips and recommendations to reduce vulnerability.

| A GENTLEMAN`S GUIDE TO LOVE & MURDER | | Dates: | Thursday, October 19, 2017 | Title: | A GENTLEMAN`S GUIDE TO LOVE & MURDER | Description: | Eisenhower Auditorium - University Park
Getting away with murder can be so much fun. And there’s no better proof than the knock-’em-dead hit show that’s earned unanimous raves and won the 2014 Tony Award for Best Musical—A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO LOVE & MURDER.
Coming direct from New York City, where a most gentlemanly NPR critic says he’s “never laughed so hard at a Broadway musical,” GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE tells the uproarious story of Monty Navarro, a distant heir to a family fortune who sets out to jump the line of succession by—you guessed it—eliminating the eight pesky relatives (all played by one fearless man) who stand in his way.
All the while, Monty has to juggle his mistress (she’s after more than just love), his fiancée (she’s his cousin but who’s keeping track?), and the constant threat of landing behind bars! Of course, it will all be worth it if he can slay his way to his inheritance—and be done in time for tea.
The Hollywood Reporter raves, “GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE restores our faith in musical comedy.” The New York Times cheers, “It will lift the hearts of all those who’ve been pining for what sometimes seems a lost art form.”

| Dawn Upshaw, Gilbert Kalish, So Percussion | | Dates: | Tuesday, October 24, 2017 | Title: | Dawn Upshaw, Gilbert Kalish, So Percussion | Description: | Dawn Upshaw, a five-time Grammy Award-winning soprano, and Gilbert Kalish, a celebrated pianist and her frequent collaborator, join forces with So Percussion, a quartet at the forefront of American musical culture.
The program features a new work, written for these artists and co-commissioned by the Center for the Performing Arts, by composer Caroline Shaw, who performed with Roomful of Teeth last season at Schwab Auditorium. The program also includes George Crumb’s song cycle The Winds of Destiny, which recasts nine songs and spirituals from the Civil War era as dramatic monologues. Both Shaw and Crumb are Pulitzer Prize winners.
Upshaw enjoys international celebrity as a singer of opera and concert repertoire ranging from the sacred works of J. S. Bach to the freshest sounds of today. Her ability to reach to the heart of music and text has gained her the devotion of a diverse audience. Upshaw’s most recent Grammy, in 2014, was for Best Classical Vocal Solo for Maria Schneider’s Winter Morning Walks.
Kalish, pianist of the Boston Symphony Chamber Players for three decades, has a discography of more than 100 recordings embracing both classical and contemporary repertoire. A distinguished professor at the State University of New York Stony Brook, Kalish has been an artist of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 2006.
So Percussion is a flexible, omnivorous entity. A writer for The New Yorker describes the music of Eric Cha-Beach, Josh Quillen, Adam Sliwinski, and Jason Treuting as an “exhilarating blend of precision and anarchy, rigor and bedlam.” The quartet’s adventurous spirit was passed down from composers like John Cage and Steve Reich, plus pioneering ensembles such as Kronos Quartet and Nexus Percussion. The ensemble’s career includes more than twenty albums, tours throughout America and the world, an array of collaborative projects, several educational programs, and a steady output of original works.
Artistic Viewpoints will not be offered before this performance. Shaw and some of the performers are scheduled to engage with the audience after the concert.

| Straight Outta Philly | | Dates: | Friday, October 27, 2017 | Title: | Straight Outta Philly | Description: | Eisenhower Auditorium - Center for the Performing Arts
Two of Philadelphia’s most spectacular movement companies come together to communicate social and political ideas through hip-hop and contemporary dance in Straight Outta Philly.
“The evening had a wonderful flow,” writes a reviewer for The Philadelphia Tribune, “alternating between the hardcore, mind-blowing pace of the street dancers, to the controlled emotion and dynamic precision of the contemporary artists … . For the shared experience of the pure joy of dance, it doesn’t get any better than Philadanco and Rennie Harris Puremovement.”
Nuttin’ But a Word!!!, choreographed by Harris and performed by his company, takes its title from an African-American expression about someone’s words being hollow.
A Movement for Five, choreographed by Dawn Marie Bazemore and performed by Philadanco, was inspired by the case of five New York City boys wrongly accused of a serious crime.
A Day in the Life, created by Harris and performed by two male dancers, is excerpted from a suite of works suggested by the choreographer’s “personal abuse and my current and past state of consciousness politically, socially, and economically.”
Folded Prism, choreographed by Thang Dao, finds Philadanco evoking “a dreamlike state where the dancers seemed to move as flawless, pristine bodies,” observes a critic for The Dance Journal.
The companies unite for the finale, Philadelphia Experiment, choreographed by Harris and danced before a backdrop of images reflecting the history and energy of the City of Brotherly Love.
“Philadelphia Experiment offered both a celebration of Philadelphia’s culture and a defiant stand against its social shortcomings,” notes the Journal writer. “… With the supremely talented, highly trained contemporary dancers out of their theatrical garb and dancing side-by-side with RHPM’s hip-hop dancers, it was impossible not to compare and contrast,” writes the Tribune critic. “While the street dancers danced ‘down in the floor’ with total abandon, the contemporary dancers instinctively ‘pulled up’ and made it look pretty. It was an interesting juxtaposition, and watching them ‘battle’ was absolutely thrilling.”

| The Rocky Horror Show at CAST | | Dates: | Saturday, October 28, 2017 | Title: | The Rocky Horror Show at CAST | Description: | One fateful night, Brad Majors and his fiancée, Janet Weiss — a wholesome, well-behaved, utterly normal young couple in love — innocently set out to visit an old professor. Unfortunately for them, this night out is destined to be one they will never forget. A thunderstorm and a flat-tire force them to seek help at the castle of Dr. Frank ’N’ Furter, an alien, transvestite scientist with a manic genius and insatiable libido. Brad, Janet, and Frank’ N’ Furter’s cohorts are swept up into the scientist’s latest experiment. The night’s misadventures will cause Brad and Janet to question everything they’ve known about themselves, each other, love, and lust. A loving homage to the classic B sci-fi film and horror genres with an irresistible rock’n’roll score, The Rocky Horror Show is a hilarious, wild ride that no audience will soon forget.

| Homebrew Sunday—All Grain | | Dates: | Sunday, October 29, 2017 | Title: | Homebrew Sunday—All Grain | Description: | Class at the Barn at Lemon making craft beer.
This month’s all grain beer might sound a little strange, but we’re all about experimenting with seasonal ingredients. Our Sun-Dried Tomato Dark Strong starts with a carmely base from the dark malts, hints of dark fruit and raisin but finishes with a subtle tomato earthiness and sweetness. The dried cherry tomatoes retain a lot of their percieved sweetness and become raisiny and prune-like when dried, the same way grapes do when dried. This flavor should blend perfectly with our Flander’s golden ale yeast strain. Come join us in brewing a truly unique beer and help bottle our experimental Milkshake IPA from last month’s brew.
