Red, White, and Bluegrass on the Downtown Cumberland Mall
Dates:Tuesday, July 03, 2018
Title:Red, White, and Bluegrass on the Downtown Cumberland Mall
Description:Please join the Downtown Cumberland area community and businesses on Tuesday July 3rd for a free pre-holiday Fourth of July celebration and Appalachian Party on the Downtown Cumberland Mall with The Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers on The McCoury Family Stage from 6 – 9 PM. The annual RED, WHITE & BLUEGRASS celebration in Downtown is a part of Burgmeier’s Hauling Discover Downtown Cumberland and is hosted by the Downtown Development Commission. “We just want people to come downtown Tuesday evening (or stay downtown when they get off work) and have a good time with a little bluegrass music. I’ve been telling people that this is a flip flop, overalls, pickup truck and hula hoop kind of event, and all are welcome. The bigger the pickup truck, the better. They can bring a picnic dinner and find a place on the bricks for a blanket and chairs, or they can dine and shop at one of their favorite restaurants or cafes. Although there will be some “white chairs” set up for the elderly and those that need to sit – we would like to see people up dancing, spinning their hula hoops and spending time with others in the downtown community” says Dave Love, Chair of the Promotions and Events Committee of the DDC. “We asked The Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers to come help us celebrate this event because they are a growingly renowned bluegrass band with regional and local Appalachian roots.” says Love. Hailing from the mountain towns of Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Maryland, the Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers draw freely from old-time, bluegrass, jamgrass, rockabilly, and swing music to create their own brand of high energy Appalachian Bluegrass. Their goal is simple: write good songs, honor the music, have fun, and take it to the road. Gary Antol (songwriter, guitar, vocals) and Libby Eddy (fiddle, vocals) formed the band in 2014. Since then they have released several CDs including The Lane Change (2015), White Lightning Road (2016), Live at the Blue Plate Special (2016), Sleep Creek Harfest (2017), and Poison River (2018). The powerful songwriting, mesmerizing vocals and hard-driving rhythms of the Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers have earned them a growing national following. An enormously popular band on the festival circuit, The Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers performed at the Emerging Artist Showcase at Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival in 2016, to high acclaim. The band has also performed at Baygrass Bluegrass, Great Blue Heron, Smoked Country Jam, Hickory Fest, and many more. Television appearances include WGN America’s “Outsiders”; Live from Center Stage in Cape Cod; and KDKA Pittsburgh. WDVX (Knoxville) has twice featured the band on their Blue Plate Special show. The band will also be showcased at the IBMA World of Bluegrass – Bluegrass Ramble in Raleigh, NC this September. The Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers have opened for The Steep Canyon Rangers, Town Mountain, The Black Lillies, Pure Prairie League, Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen, Larry Keel, Jeff Austin, and Cabinet. Love, who also operates Azad’s of Cumberland on N. Centre Street in Downtown, will be thanking all of the sponsors of Discover Downtown Cumberland at 8 PM during the event by drawing the name of a sponsor to win a hand-made Persian rugs from his shop. The Discover Downtown Cumberland free community music relies solely on private sponsorship and is brought to the community year-round, in part, by Burgmeier’s Hauling. Del McCoury and the McCoury family, Dustin & Cristy Freas, Azad’s of Cumberland, CBIZ, Adam’s Family Funeral Home, ACT 1st FCU, Law Offices of Trozzo, Lowery & Weston, Ramada Cumberland Downtown, Cornwell Remodeling & Restoration, Basecamp Coffee, Scott & Toni Love of D’Atri Restaurant in LaVale, Dr. & Mrs. Peter Halmos, and The Embassy Theatre. Any sponsor who has contributed $250 or more by 8 PM on July 3rd is eligible to win the $2800 Persian Sarouq rug donated by Love. For more information on sponsorship, please contact DDC Executive Director, Mikayla Dodge at Mikayla.Dodge@cumberlandmd.gov or visit her office located on the ground level of City Hall.
