Description:Unemployment Compensation Understanding unemployment compensation and the application of its laws can be tricky. This seminar series brings the expertise to you, from a representative from the Office of Unemployment Compensation Benefits. Session 1: Unemployment Compensation 101 and SIDES This seminar presents an overview of the claims filing process, the determination process, and appeal rights. We will show you the forms that an employer may receive when a claim is opened, how they are used to determine the claimant’s eligibility and to protect the employer’s liability, discuss the specific time frame to respond to these forms, and the importance of responding in a timely fashion. In addition, we will discuss the SIDES program and its advantages and disadvantages. Accounting and Human Resource Professionals: Each session has been approved for 3 CPE credits through the Center for Accounting Education and Research. These sessions have been submitted to the HR Certification Institute for approval of 3 professional development credits through the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). To date, Sessions 1 and 2 have been approved by HRCI. About the Speaker: Nancy Smithbauer Workforce Development Representative Customer Service Division Presenters and training materials will be provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. Description:Bill Charlap is a consummate jazz pianist who has performed and recorded with many of the foremost artists of our day, including jazzmen Wynton Marsalis and Phil Woods and singers Tony Bennett and Barbra Streisand. Schwab Auditorium - Tuesday, Feb. 13 @ 7:30 pm Tickets available at or 814-863-0255 In 1997, Charlap (pronounced Shar-lap) formed his trio with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington. Today, the Bill Charlap Trio, thrice nominated for a Grammy Award, is lauded as one of the best ensembles in jazz. After releasing albums on Blue Note Records for a decade, the trio made its debut on the Impulse! Label with 2016’s Notes from New York. The DownBeat five-star review of the album calls it “a masterclass in class.” Its 2017 follow-up, Uptown, Downtown, is Grammy nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. In 2015, Charlap teamed with Bennett on The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern, which earned a Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Album. “Bill Charlap approaches a song the way a lover approaches his beloved …,” writes a journalist for Time. “No matter how imaginative or surprising his take on a song is, he invariably zeroes in on its essence.” Charlap has been the artistic director of New York City’s Jazz in July Festival for thirteen seasons. He’s also produced concerts for JVC Jazz Festival, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Hollywood Bowl. Charlap, who also performs in a duo setting with his wife, pianist and composer Renee Rosnes, is director of jazz studies at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey. Description:Schwab Auditorium - Thursday, Feb 15 2018 Tickets available at or 814-863-0255 Last season, pianist Wu Han, violinist Philip Setzer, and cellist David Finckel captivated a Schwab Auditorium audience with a performance of Ludwig van Beethoven piano trios. This season, the exceptional ensemble will return to Penn State to perform three more Beethoven compositions. The program will include the trios in G Major, Op. 1, No. 2; E-flat Major, Op. 70, No. 2; and B-flat Major, Op. 97, Archduke. “It used to be the Beaux Arts Trio that other piano trios had to look up to and attempt to emulate,” writes “Now it’s the Han-Setzer-Finckel triumvirate that is the standard bearer.” Han and Finckel, who in 2012 won Musical America’s Musicians of the Year honor, are the artistic directors of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Setzer, a founding member of Emerson String Quartet (of which Finckel was also a member for more than three decades), has received acclaim in the musical capitals of the world. The Han-Setzer-Finckel trio has recorded piano trios by Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn, and Antonín Leopold Dvorák on the ArtistLed label. Artistic Viewpoints will not be offered before this performance.
