Classical Coffeehouse: Cuban Music

Title:Classical Coffeehouse: Cuban Music
Description:Presented by the Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State and the Penn State Alumni Association in partnership with the Blue & White Society and the PSU Music Service Club. Penn State School of Music faculty members and students who have traveled to Cuba will share music, experiences, and reflections on one of the world’s richest artistic cultures. Designed especially for Penn State students, but open to everyone, Classical Coffeehouse provides an opportunity to hear traditional and contemporary music in a casual atmosphere. Each coffeehouse includes a mini performance, discussions among artists and audience members, and social time with the musicians and others in attendance. Enjoy complimentary refreshments. Seating is limited. Standing room is available when seating is filled. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Classical Coffeehouse is free for University Park students. A $5 donation is suggested for each community member. Donations help to sustain the coffeehouse series. Location: Hintz Family Alumni Center's Robb Hall

Title:Unemployment Compensation: Session 2
Description:Understanding unemployment compensation and the application of its laws can be tricky. This seminar series brings the expertise to you, from a representative from the Office of Unemployment Compensation Benefits. Session 2: Separation Issues and Refusing Suitable Work This seminar explains how the service center discovers whether the claimant quit or was discharged, the fact finding process, burden of proof, the factors that are considered when making a determination, and appeal rights. We will also discuss the employer’s responsibilities regarding notification that a job offer has been made to both the claimant and the service center, the factors used in suitable work determinations, and appeal rights. Accounting and Human Resource Professionals: Each session has been approved for 3 CPE credits through the Center for Accounting Education and Research. These sessions have been submitted to the HR Certification Institute for approval of 3 professional development credits through the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). To date, Sessions 1 and 2 have been approved by HRCI. About the Speaker: Nancy Smithbauer Workforce Development Representative Customer Service Division Presenters and training materials will be provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. All sessions are held from 10:00 a.m.-noon 200 Innovation Blvd., 243 Technology Center, University Park PA Cost: $20 per session. Or all three sessions $49.

Description:Eisenhower Auditorium - March 20, 2018 Tickets available at cpa.psu.edu or 814-863-2055 The National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba, which has been pivotal in introducing music of its homeland to international audiences, will make its Penn State premiere in a Latin-flavored and dance-inspired program featuring Maurice Ravel’s Bolero — plus works by Manuel De Falla, Carlos Fariñas, and Amadeo Roldán. Yekwon Sunwoo, gold-medal winner of the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will perform Sergei Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43, as featured soloist with the orchestra. Sunwoo, the first South Korean to win the prestigious competition, is a graduate of Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music. “The National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba can play symphonies by Beethoven and Mendelssohn, and play them well,” writes a reviewer for the Tampa Bay Times. “But what is special is when the musicians make like a big dance band from the Tropicana, the legendary nightclub in Havana, and play classical music with an Afro-Cuban beat.” Founded in 1960, the orchestra covers an immense symphonic and chamber repertoire ranging from Baroque to contemporary music. The ensemble has toured to the United States, Russia, Poland, Spain, Mexico, Argentina, and other countries. Music Director Enrique Pérez Mesa, a native of Cuba and a graduate of its National School of Arts, has led performances in leading concert halls on three continents. The Grammy Award nominee has also recorded music for Cuban and Spanish films. Mr. Sunwoo appears by arrangement with the Cliburn.

Description:Event features a representative of Governor Larry Hogan and the Mayor of Hancock, Dr. Ralph Salvagno HANCOCK, MD, February 26, 2018 - As part of the celebration of National Surveyors Week in Maryland, the Maryland Society of Surveyors (MSS) is holding an event March 23, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in Hancock, MD. WHAT: The Appalachian Chapter of the MSS has established an EDM (Electronic Distance Measuring) Calibration Baseline along the Western Maryland Rail Trail for the purpose of checking and calibrating certain types of surveying and measuring equipment. MSS will dedicate the Baseline to the memory of Ralph Hanks Donnelly. Donnelly, long-time member of MSS and President in 1983, worked with Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas to transform the long-abandoned C & O Canal into a national park. Donnelly was commissioned in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He surveyed roads, parks, and designed bridges. In World War II, Major Ralph Donnelly served in England, Scotland, France, Italy, Germany, and Austria. He later served in the private sector as a professional surveyor for over forty years. He was also president of Washington County Maryland Historical Society, Vice-Chairman of the Maryland Board of Registration, and an active member of the C & O Canal Association. A collection of his correspondence, photographs, and maps are held at the Gelman Library at George Washington University. WHERE: The ceremony will take place at the extreme western end of the baseline adjoining the parking lot at Hancock Station of the Western Maryland Rail Trail. This lot is in the 0-100 block on the south side of West Main Street (MD 144) near the Rescue Squad station. Set your navigation system for 42 West Main Street, the location of the Hancock Town Visitor Center and look for the parking lot on the opposite side of the road. In the event of rain, the alternate location is the Hancock Town Visitor Center at 42 West Main Street. WHEN: The event is March 23, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. FORMAT: There will be several speakers. A representative of the Governor will formally present a Proclamation declaring the observance of National Surveyors Week in Maryland, which will be followed by the Baseline dedication and then an equipment demonstration to highlight the Baseline’s purpose. A reception with light refreshments will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. (+/-) at the Hancock Town Visitor Center at 42 West Main Street (a short walk away).
