The Soul Rebels
Dates:Sunday, September 20, 2015
Title:The Soul Rebels
Description:The Soul Rebels 4:00 pm Sunday, September 20, 2015 Eisenhower Auditorium The life of the party? That would be The Soul Rebels, an eight-piece brass band that blends funk and soul with elements of hip-hop, jazz, rock, and pop to evoke the atmosphere of a dance club. The band, which toured four continents in 2014 alone, took root from the shared desire of original members Lumar LeBlanc and Derrick Moss to combine the music they heard on the radio with the brass band traditions of their native New Orleans. “The Soul Rebels are the missing link between Public Enemy and Louis Armstrong,” writes a critic for The Village Voice. On tour, the band has collaborated live with Metallica, Green Day, Maceo Parker, Galactic, Slick Rick, Joey Bada$$, Big Freedia, and The String Cheese Incident and shared stages with Kanye West, John Mayer, Cee Lo Green, Jack White, Estelle, Alabama Shakes, Dave Matthews, Arcade Fire, and The Allman Brothers Band. “The Soul Rebels,” a Vibe reviewer notes, “are rebelling against one, albeit detestable thing: starchy paint-by-numbers music.” When not touring, the group’s weekly gig at New Orleans’ Le Bon Temps Roulé overflows with the kind of contagious, shout-along horns-and-percussion mayhem the musicians take with them wherever they perform. The Soul Rebels performance is part of artsUP, a full afternoon of free performances, demonstrations, tours, and activities showcasing the arts at Penn State. Artistic Viewpoints is not offered before this concert. The Soul Rebels concert does not qualify for a discounted Choice series. FREE general-admission tickets

Ragamala Dance Company
Dates:Tuesday, September 22, 2015
Title:Ragamala Dance Company
Description:Ragamala Dance Company Song of the Jasmine Ranee Ramaswamy, Aparna Ramaswamy, and Rudresh Mahanthappa, creators 7:30 pm Tuesday, September 22, 2015 Eisenhower Auditorium “You don’t generally go to a performance of Bharatanatyam, the classical South Indian dance style, expecting to want to get up and dance. The form inspires a more removed kind of reverence … ,” observes a New York Times reviewer. “But … Ragamala Dance, a Bharatanatyam company from Minneapolis, upended that expectation with the New York premiere of Song of the Jasmine, a soulful, imaginative, and rhythmically contagious collaboration with the superb jazz composer and alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa.” Born in 1992 from the creative vision of mother and daughter Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy—co-artistic directors, choreographers, and principal dancers—Ragamala investigates the ancient origins and contemporary possibilities of Indian classical dance. The Ramaswamys, both born in India, embrace the philosophy, spirituality, myth, and mysticism of their heritage to create not works but worlds—visceral, universal experiences that use Indian art forms to express their contemporary point of view. Song of the Jasmine, which features the Ramaswamys and three other dancers, takes its inspiration from “Sacred Sayings of the Goddess,” a poem by the female mystic Andal. While no words are spoken or sung during the evening-length performance, the poem’s notions of the sacred and the sensual are explored in dance set to music played onstage by Mahanthappa and four other musicians on guitar, Indian flute, percussion, and violin.
