Centre County Water Rescue Drill
Dates:Saturday, July 21, 2018
Title:Centre County Water Rescue Drill
Description:Centre County’s Improved Swiftwater and Flood Response Capabilities Since October of 2015 some Centre County Emergency Service Organizations (Howard Fire Company, Milesburg Fire Company, Pine Glen Fire Company and Pleasant Gap Fire Company) have invested great resources into training, equipment, and preparedness for swiftwater and flood related emergencies. The financial resources needed to support this initiative have been provided by the individual companies involved with the initiative as well as the South Central Mountains Regional Task Force. Three of these agencies (Howard Fire Company, Pine Glen Fire Company, and Pleasant Gap Fire Company) have received recognition through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Voluntary Rescue Service Recognition Program. Being recognized by this program, these departments completed several different Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission training courses. These courses include Water Rescue Awareness, Water Rescue Emergency Response, Ice Rescue, Emergency Boat Operations, and Advanced Line Systems. Another element for the recognition is minimum standards for available response equipment including personal protective equipment, victim rescue and packaging equipment, boats, and rope and line system tackle. The Centre County Fire Chiefs’ Association has recognized this group as the Centre County Water Rescue Task Force. Training continues for members of these departments, the four departments continue to have county level drills and exercises to maintain skill levels and preparedness. This task force has participated in other drills in different parts of the state in the past. On July 21st, 2018 the Centre County Water Rescue Task Force will be actively participating in a large drill that is jointly designed and operated by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the PA Army National Guard, and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency. As part of this exercise, the public is invited to observe all of this commitment, preparation, and resources at work throughout the Centre County region. If interested, please plan to observe these teams at the Pleasant Gap Fire Company, 475 Robinson Lane, Pleasant Gap PA beginning around 0900. Howard Fire Company has been training and equipped for quite some time, the recent activity the last two and a half years has allowed the department to further improve capabilities. Howard Fire Company has a total of 10 trained responders for swift water rescue and flood emergencies. The department has five (5) boats to cover different types of water related incidents with a variety of technology including search lights and down scan sonar. The department also has a UTV that can be used to haul inflatable boats in poor access water ways. Pine Glen Fire Company a total of 10 trained responders as well. Milesburg Fire Company has a total of 7 people trained for the swift water and flood emergencies. The department is equipped with two inflatable boats and equipment for rope related emergencies as well. The department has a special trailer and engine rescue that would be responding to these types of emergencies. The Pleasant Gap Fire Company has 14 trained responders. The department is also a licensed Basic Life Support Ambulance (BLS) and maintains three ambulances, one of which supports the team during deployments / activations. The department also has rope and rigging to support advanced types of technical rescue incidents. The company has a specialized trailer to support all types of technical rescue incidents involving water as well as confined space and high angle. The department also supports the swift water response with a heavy rescue for additional rope, rigging, scene lighting and other equipment.
