|Description:||Event features a representative of Governor Larry Hogan and the Mayor of Hancock, Dr. Ralph Salvagno
HANCOCK, MD, February 26, 2018 - As part of the celebration of National Surveyors Week in Maryland, the Maryland Society of Surveyors (MSS) is holding an event March 23, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in Hancock, MD.
The Appalachian Chapter of the MSS has established an EDM (Electronic Distance Measuring) Calibration Baseline along the Western Maryland Rail Trail for the purpose of checking and calibrating certain types of surveying and measuring equipment. MSS will dedicate the Baseline to the memory of Ralph Hanks Donnelly. Donnelly, long-time member of MSS and President in 1983, worked with Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas to transform the long-abandoned C & O Canal into a national park.
Donnelly was commissioned in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He surveyed roads, parks, and designed bridges. In World War II, Major Ralph Donnelly served in England, Scotland, France, Italy, Germany, and Austria. He later served in the private sector as a professional surveyor for over forty years.
He was also president of Washington County Maryland Historical Society, Vice-Chairman of the Maryland Board of Registration, and an active member of the C & O Canal Association. A collection of his correspondence, photographs, and maps are held at the Gelman Library at George Washington University.
The ceremony will take place at the extreme western end of the baseline adjoining the parking lot at Hancock Station of the Western Maryland Rail Trail. This lot is in the 0-100 block on the south side of West Main Street (MD 144) near the Rescue Squad station. Set your navigation system for 42 West Main Street, the location of the Hancock Town Visitor Center and look for the parking lot on the opposite side of the road. In the event of rain, the alternate location is the Hancock Town Visitor Center at 42 West Main Street.
The event is March 23, 2018 at 1:00 p.m.
There will be several speakers. A representative of the Governor will formally present a Proclamation declaring the observance of National Surveyors Week in Maryland, which will be followed by the Baseline dedication and then an equipment demonstration to highlight the Baseline’s purpose. A reception with light refreshments will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. (+/-) at the Hancock Town Visitor Center at 42 West Main Street (a short walk away).
Family of the Honoree, Mayor and Council of Hancock, Hancock Rotary Club, Hancock Historical Society, Washington County Historical Society, Mason Dixon Line Preservation Partnership, Friends of Fort Frederick, the C & O Canal Association, Surveyors Historical Society, West Virginia Society of Professional Land Surveyors, Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors, all members of MSS, the Washington County Commissioners, the Western Maryland State Legislative delegation, certain officials of the National Geodetic Survey, certain officials of the Maryland State Highway Administration, representatives from the MD Department of Natural Resources, representatives from the MD Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, various press outlets, and interested members of the general public.
