|Dates:||Tuesday, February 07, 2017|
|Title:||IU8`s Regional High School STEM Competition|
|Description:||IU8 to Host Regional PA STEM Competition on February 7
Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 (IU8) will host the Regional PA STEM Competition where eight participating high school teams will compete for the chance to represent the region at the state level.
ALTOONA – IU8 will host eight high school teams from across the region who will showcase how they used STEM to design a device or project that is capable of “Making Our Lives Better Through STEM,” which is the theme of this year’s competition.
The regional competition will take place on Tuesday, February 7 from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at IU8 located at 4500 Sixth Avenue, Altoona. The eight schools with participating teams are: Altoona Area Junior High School; Berlin Brothersvalley High School; Chestnut Ridge High School; Greater Johnstown High School; Hollidaysburg High School; Richland High School; Turkeyfoot Valley Area High School; and Meyersdale Area High School.
Students will engage with their local communities to learn about STEM-related careers and the skills necessary to be successful. To culminate the experience, students will be asked to present their findings and explain the practical applications of their device to a panel of judges. The challenge will test teams’ communication, problem solving, and critical thinking skills while providing a unique opportunity to share their creativity with students from across the state.
The winning team from IU8’s regional competition will compete at the state level at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology on May 19, 2017. Regional competitions will be held at each of the Commonwealth’s Intermediate Units (IU) during the month of February at a date and time identified by each IU. Approximately 170 teams, each representing a different high school, are expected to participate in this year’s competition. The grand prize for the winning team is a $2,000 college scholarship for each member.
The PA STEM Competition is an annual event established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Governor Tom Wolf in an effort to expose students to STEM-related jobs, skills and concepts. More information about the PA STEM Competition can be found at: www.pastemcompetition.com.
