Curve Clip Aeros Wings Jul 24, 2008 The Curve continued their stretch of good baseball against the top team in the Eastern League’s Southern Division, doubling up the Akron Aeros, 6-3 on Wednesday night at BCB. With the victory the Curve secured themselves a winning homestand and a series win against Akron. Offensively the Curve pounded out six extra-base hits and got a solid outing from starter Luis Munoz. Munoz made just one mistake over seven innings. The right-hander allowed a three-run home run to Wes Hodges in the top of the fourth inning to give the Aeros a 3-0 lead. The Curve, though scored six unanswered runs. Altoona grabbed half the runs off Akron starter Ryan Edell. An RBI single by James Boone plated Steve Lerud for the Curve’s first run in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 3-1. In the sixth, though, it was Lerud’s second home run of the season – a two-run shot – that tied the contest, 3-3. Off reliever Tony Sipp (0-3) the bottom of the eighth Curve scored three runs. Jason Bowers provided the go-ahead RBI double that scored Brad Corley to give Altoona a 4-3 edge. Corley finished the night 3-for-4 with three doubles and two runs scored. Lerud added an RBI ground out to extend the Curve lead to 5-3. Lerud had three RBI’s on Wednesday. Miguel Perez added the final run with an RBI double in the frame. Perez was 2-for-4. Juan Mateo (4-1) tossed a pair of scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. Mateo allowed just one hit. The Curve will look to take four out of five from the first-place team in the Eastern League’s Southern Division on Thursday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. Right-hander Dan Reichert (0-1, 6.75) will make his second start in a Curve uniform, while Akron righty Kevin Dixon (8-5, 4.05) will take the stump for the Aeros. Thursday at BCB will be Super Splash Day. The Curve will turn the ballpark into a water park. Bring your swimming trunks or bathing suit and have fun in the sun. If you don't want to get wet, don't worry -- there will be specially-designated "Dry Zones" throughout the ballpark. NOTES – The Curve are 5-3 on this current nine-game homestand, splitting a four-game set with Harrisburg and grabbing three out of four from Akron…The Curve pounded out six extra-base hits on Wednesday, two short of their season-high, which is eight....Brad Corley's three hits were all doubles, which ties him for a season-high for doubles in a game with Jonel Pacheco. Pacheco accomplished the feat on June 8 versus Connecticut... Angel Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to five games with a 3-for-4 performance. Gonzalez has recorded a hit in every game he has played in Double-A. Chiefs Announce Changes Jul 24, 2008 The Johnstown Chiefs announced today changes to their 2008-09 schedule. The game scheduled for Wednesday, November 12 at the War Memorial arena against the Wheeling Nailers will now be played against the Cincinnati Cyclones. Also, three home games that had been scheduled against the Dayton Bombers now feature different opponents. On Saturday, February 21 and Sunday, February 22 the Elmira Jackals will visit Johnstown instead of Dayton, and on Wednesday, March 4 the Wheeling Nailers will replace the Bombers on the Chiefs’ schedule. With the Pensacola Ice Pilots no longer a member of the ECHL, the Chiefs’ game that had been scheduled for Tuesday, February 24 has been removed from the schedule. To make up for that road game, Johnstown will now visit US Bank Arena to take on the Cincinnati Cyclones on Wednesday, April 1. That game will be a part of a three-game set against the defending Kelly Cup champions to close out the regular season. The Chiefs’ 21st season in the ECHL gets under way on Friday, October 17 at 7:30 p.m. against the Trenton Devils at Sovereign Bank Arena. The Chiefs return to Johnstown for their home opener the very next night against the Wheeling Nailers at 7:05 p.m. Steelers Set To Report To Camp Jul 23, 2008 The Pittsburgh Steelers begin defense of their AFC North Division title when the entire team reports to training camp Sunday, July 27, at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa. Curve Drop To Akron Jul 23, 2008 A trio of Akron pitchers held the Curve to just five hits in a 7-1 win over Altoona at Blair County Ballpark on Tuesday night. Akron starter Steven Wright (2-1) allowed just one run over five innings to get the win over the Curve. Reid Santos and Luis Perdomo combined to toss four perfect innings of combined relief. The loss for the Curve (45-58) snapped a modest three-game winnings streak and prevented Altoona from winning four straight, which would have matched their season high in consecutive wins. Derek Hankins suffered the loss. The right-hander gave up an early three runs and could not recover. Hankins tossed 4 2/3 innings and allowed six hits and three runs. The only Curve run came in the bottom of the third inning by way of Jason Bowers RBI double that plated Angel Gonzalez. Bowers finished the night 2-for-4. Akron (63-40) scored a pair of runs in the second, one in the third. The Aeros also put one run across in the sixth, a pair in the seventh and a single run in the ninth. First baseman Matt Whitney finished the night 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI’s. A usually strong bullpen faltered on Tuesday. Each Curve reliever gave up at least one run. Pat Bresnehan (one run), Jeff Sues (two runs) and Chris Castorri (one run) all fell victim to the league’s best hitting team. The Curve will look to reignite on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Luis Munoz (1-4, 8.37) will get the ball for the Curve, while southpaw Ryan Edell (5-6, 4.18) takes the hill for the Aeros. Wednesday at Blair County Ballpark, the first 2,000 fans of all ages through the gates will take home the second edition of the Curve’s Tenth Anniversary Photo Ball. This edition of the photo ball, sponsored by Mid-Atlantic Dairy will feature the likeness of Curve greats Jack Wilson and Adam Hyzdu. Wednesday, fans will also save big with one dollar hot dog specials. Wednesday is also a Giant Eagle Advantage Card Night. By showing your Advantage Card at the BCB ticket windows, fans can purchase one outfield reserve seat at regular price and receive a second one, free. Curve Wants Will Ferrell Jul 22, 2008 Hollywood mega star Will Ferrell officially has an open invitation to attend an Altoona Curve game. Will he accept the offer or just throw the Curve's invitation letter into a pile for some intern in his agent's office to open and forge an autograph on before returning? That is the question which will be pondered by Curve fans Monday evening at Blair County Ballpark, the home of the Double-A Eastern League affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. As part of "Please Come to Altoona Will Ferrell Night", which will highlight Monday's 5:35 p.m. doubleheader at Blair County Ballpark against the Akron Aeros (AA/Indians), the Curve and their fans will officially begin the process of inviting Ferrell -- best known for his hilarious roles on Saturday Night Live and for playing unforgettable big screen characters such as "Ron Burgandy" (Anchorman), "Ricky Bobby" (Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby) and "Frank The Tank" (Old School) -- to Central Pennsylvania for any remaining 2008 Curve home game. The Curve, with the help of fans attending Monday's doubleheader at Blair County Ballpark, will put together a formal letter, a DVD of Curve staff, players and fans pleading Ferrell to travel to Altoona, and a package of incentives in hopes of luring one of the biggest movie stars of our generation to Altoona for a future Curve game. The very enticing incentive package put together by the Curve will include: --A $716.67 appearance fee (based on his birth date of 7/16/67) --A ride to and from the Blair County Airport in mascot Steamer's Mini Van --Two (2) Diamond Club Tickets to the game of his choice and the opportunity to throw out a ceremonial first pitch --The opportunity to host the "Curve Game Day Show" in the character of “Ron Burgandy” from Anchorman --An opportunity to broadcast one inning of the Curve game on radio (Ferrell attended USC in hopes of becoming a sports broadcaster) --One Curve Burger and a small fountain drink --A Curve hat from the ballpark's Lost and Found Bin --A round of golf for he and sidekick John C. Reilly on the Moon with Tiger Woods, as he demanded during Sunday's telecast of the ESPY Awards on ESPN (The only caveat is that the Curve still are awaiting word from Woods on “Please Come to Altoona Tiger Woods Night”, which was quietly announced earlier in the season) To kick off the official invitation process, many of the promotions during Monday's doubleheader will pay homage to Ferrell and his zany big screen characters. Video clips from his movies will be scattered throughout the night and Curve staff members and ballpark personnel will dress up as some of his more memorable characters, including Curve General Manager Todd Parnell, who is set to don the Wonderbread Racing Team suit worn by "Ricky Bobby" in Talledega Nights. Hopefully, no one will re-create the scene in "Old School" where Ferrell, as "Frank the Tank", wears his "birthday suit" and goes streaking down the street. In addition, on-field, between-inning contests will be themed out to pay tribute to some of Ferrell's more popular films. Fans will be able to join the fun promotion as well. A video camera will be set up on the ballpark's main concourse during Monday's doubleheader and fans will be invited to record a short video making their case for why Will should attend an upcoming Curve game. The best videos will be included in the package, which will be sent to him in the coming days. In addition, the Curve will provide several pre-addressed postcards for fans to fill out and send to Ferrell's fan mail address. Speaking of fans, one local man will enjoy his 15 minutes of fame courtesy of the Curve's "Please Come to Altoona Will Ferrell Night". Will Farrell of Altoona will be a special guest at the ballpark Monday evening. Farrell (different spelling, but close enough) will throw out a ceremonial first pitch and sign autographs for fans throughout the night. For updates on whether the Curve's elaborate plan to lure Will Ferrell to Altoona works, fans should visit AltoonaCurve.com. In addition to the Will Ferrell promotion, fans attending Monday's Curve/Akron doubleheader can enjoy half-price Curve Burgers courtesy of Atlantic Broadband and it's another Ponderosa Steakhouse Family Four-Pack Monday. Families of four will receive four tickets, four regular hot dogs and four small sodas for only $40. Curve Sweeps Aeros Jul 22, 2008 The Altoona Curve played a pair of solid baseball games against the Eastern League’s top team on Monday night at Blair County Ballpark. Altoona grabbed a sweep of the Akron Aeros, as the Curve prevailed 3-2 in eight innings in the first contest and were winners 5-3 in the nightcap. The Curve (45-56) have won three in a row and are off to a 3-2 start to their nine-game homestand. In the nightcap, Brian Holliday, (1-1) a Pittsburgh native from Moon Township tossed a seven-inning complete game. It was just Holliday’s second Double-A start of his career. Altoona scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth as part of a four-hit attack against Akron starter Jim Deters (0-3). Highlighting the scoring was Brad Corley’s two-run home run – his 11th of the year. The Curve would tack on a run for good measure in the bottom of the sixth. Newcomer Angel Gonzalez doubled home Luis Cruz to provide Altoona with an insurance run. In the first game, James Boone delivered a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Curve to a 3-2 victory. Boone finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI in the win, Altoona’s fifth in the last seven games. Ronald Belisario (4-1) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the victory for Altoona. Erik Stiller (5-3) allowed the game-winning run to suffer the loss. With that win, the Curve improved to 7-1 in extra inning games and 22-11 in one-run contests with the win. The Curve return to the field on Tuesday for the third game of the series against Akron at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Derek Hankins (1-6, 4.26) looks for his second win of the year for Altoona while Akron will send righty Steven Wright (1-1, 6.00) to the hill. Steelers Sign Mike Humpal Jul 16, 2008 The Steelers announced today the signing of 2008 draft pick, linebacker Mike Humpal. Financial terms of Humpal’s three-year contract were not released. Humpal (6-3, 240) was the Steelers sixth round choice (188th overall) in this year’s draft out of Iowa. In his final 24 games he posted 172 tackles (69 solos), 10 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, five pass deflections and six interceptions. Humpal was named team captain for the 2007 season and was an All-Big Ten Conference second-team choice by the media, adding honorable mention from the league’s coaches. Humpal was the first of two sixth round draft picks for the 2008 season (Ryan Mundy). He is the fifth of Pittsburgh’s seven draft choices to sign this year. Former Curve Player Plays In All-Star Game Jul 16, 2008 Former Altoona Curve outfielder and current Pittsburgh Pirate Nate McLouth became only the fourth former Curve player to play in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game Tuesday night during the 79th Midsummer Classic at Yankee Stadium in New York. More notably, of the previous three Curve alums to be selected to participate in the MLB All-Star Game -- pitchers Bronson Arroyo and Brendan Donnelly and shortstop Jack Wilson -- McLouth is the first to have been drafted by Pittsburgh, play for the Curve, and be selected to play in the Mid-Summer Classic as a member of the Pirates. Wilson played in Altoona in 2000 and was a Pirates' All-Star selection in 2004, but was originally drafted by St. Louis and traded to Pittsburgh in 2000. Arroyo, who was a member of the Curve's inaugural 1999 club, represented the Cincinnati Reds in the 2006 All-Star Game. Donnelly, who briefly appeared for Altoona in 1999, became the first-ever former Curve player to participate in an All-Star Game, when he was selected as a member of the Anaheim Angels in 2003. McLouth, in his year as the Pirates' everyday center fielder, has enjoyed a breakthrough 2008 season, hitting .281 with 33 doubles, three triples, 19 home runs, 65 RBI's and 11 stolen bases in 90 games for the Bucs. Originally drafted by Pittsburgh in the 25th round of the 2000 June Draft out of Whitehall High School in Michigan, McLouth arrived in Altoona in 2004 and starred on the only club in franchise history to reach the Eastern League Championship Series. The left-handed hitter primarily played right field for the 2004 Curve and hit .322 with 40 doubles, four triples, eight home runs, 73 RBI's and 31 stolen bases in a team-high 133 games. McLouth's 40 doubles and 166 hits established club records, which he continues to hold, while his .322 average and 93 runs scored rank second in the Curve's single-season record book. Interestingly, despite his terrific 2004 season with Altoona, McLouth was not selected to either the Eastern League's mid-season or post-season All-Star Team. Recently, he was one of 15 players honored with a spot on the Curve's ceremonial Tenth Anniversary Team. Steelers Sign 2 Draft Picks Jul 15, 2008 The Steelers announced today the signing of two of their draft picks for the 2008 season, quarterback Dennis Dixon and safety Ryan Mundy. Financial terms of both three-year contracts were not released. Dixon (6-3, 195) was the Steelers fifth round choice (156th overall) in this year’s draft out of Oregon, where he was named the Pac-10 Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2007, while guiding the Ducks to an 8-1 record and a No. 2 seed in the BCS standing before suffering a season-ending knee injury. He tallied 6,337 yards in total offense while setting the school’s QB rushing career record of 1,208 yards. Dixon completed 444-of-695 passes for 38 touchdowns during his career. Mundy (6-1, 215) was the Steelers sixth round choice (194th overall) in this year’s draft out of West Virginia, where in 2007 he was the fourth-leading tackler for the Mountaineers with 62 tackles. He tied the team lead with three interceptions for 75 yards and also led the team in pass breakups with seven. Mundy spent his first four years as starting safety at the University of Michigan and then transferred to West Virginia as a post-graduate transfer. He finished his time at Michigan with 86 career tackles and three interceptions. Dixon and Mundy join Tony Hills and Bruce Davis as the four 2008 draft picks the Steelers have signed for the upcoming season. St. Michael Takes First Game in Legion Semifinals Jul 15, 2008 Saints down Ebensburg 3-1 in Cambria County American Legion Semifinals on Monday. In other sprint car action, Rodney Glass, a former champion, returned to victory lane in the 600 Sprints; Tim Mertz came out of fifth place for the win in the Sidewinders, and Brian Marriott led every lap in the 270 Sprints. In local stock cars Leroy Long beat Ricky Harper and a strong field of cars to the win in Mini Stocks and Terry Smith came out of seventh place and used patience and persistence to win the Thunder Car feature. One final luck driver for the night was Levi Peck who won his heat race and then offered a marriage proposal to his girlfriend Ashley on the front stretch at half time. She said “yes.” Goshorn Racing Supply will sponsor next week’s races including special features with the Late Models and Legends cars taking the place of the Sidewinders and 305 Sprints. Rodney Glass has been a power at Path Valley for more than a decade. So given a chance to start on the pole in the 600 Sprint feature, he raced away with Kevin Steele and Tim Glatfelter in hot pursuit. Six cautions gave his pursuers chances to catch him but at the finish the front five were Glass, Steele, Glatfelter, Jake Murphy and Tom Kohler. Glass and Kohler won the heat races. On a lap two restart Todd Spangler took the 305 Sprints lead from “Cowboy’ Jim Kennedy and from lap seven on raced just ahead of Craig Laudermilch to the finish. The front five were Spangler, Laudermilch, Michael Wagner, Mike Freet and Kennedy and the heat winners were Mike Heckman and Spangler. Tim Mertz passed Rick Hench on a lap seven restart and raced to the Sidewinders win with a lead of half the track and more. The front five were Mertz, Ryan Greth, Stanley Fleming, Rohan Beasley and Denny Landvater and Mertz and Greth won the heats. Brian Marriott started on the pole and proved uncatchable in the 270 Sprints feature. He led by two turns as the race went with no cautions except for lap nine. At the pole the front five were Marriott, Sean McAndrews, Colby Dice, Jason Houtz, and Tom Tice and the heat winners were Tim McClelland and Levi Peck. Leroy Long finally passed Mike Hawbaker for the Mini Stock lead on lap nine and, as the race went without caution, held off a determined Ricky Harper to win by a turn. Long, Harper, Frank Gordon, Hawbaker and Gary Newell were the front five finishers and Newell and Long won the heat races. Terry Smith passed Mike Cordero for the Thunder Car lead on lap two after three restarts and then front lap six on stayed just ahead of Denny Scofield to the win. The front five were Smith, Scofield, Bill Kennedy, Randy Stull and Charles Kimmel and the heats went to Scofield and Smith. The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. From March to October, Path Valley races stock cars and sprints Friday nights and AMA bikes or Strictly Stock junkyard cars Saturday nights. Curve Split Twinbill With SeaWolves Jul 14, 2008 Jason Delaney and James Boone each knocked in a pair of runs and Corey Hamman tossed five strong innings in his return to the Curve starting rotation as Altoona defeated the Erie SeaWolves, 4-2, in the nightcap of a make-shift doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park in Erie. The SeaWolves outlasted Altoona, 12-11, in the day's earlier contest, which was suspended due to inclement weather on Saturday. Delaney drilled an opposite-field, two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to start the Curve scoring in the nightcap. The longball extended Delaney's hitting streak to 15 games, which matches the fourth-longest stretch in team history and is the longest streak since Chris Duffy hit safely in 15 straight during the 2004 season. Boone increased the Curve's lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth with a two-out, two-run double to right-center, which scored Miguel Perez and Melvin Dorta. Dorta singled ahead of Boone to extend his current hitting streak to nine games, during which he has 18 hits in 32 at-bats (.563). Hamman (5-6), who earlier in the day was sent down from Triple-A Indianapolis, scattered six hits and allowed only two runs over five innings to earn his fifth win in his last six decisions with Altoona. The left-hander held Erie off the board over the first four innings before allowing two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Ryan Roberson RBI double. Juan Mateo pitched the sixth and seventh innings to pick up his second save in as many appearances. In the earlier contest, which started Saturday and was completed on Sunday, Altoona lost an early four-run advantage, then nearly rallied from a five-run hole before dropping a 12-11 decision to the SeaWolves. Luis Munoz (1-3) took the loss in his first start for Altoona after being optioned from Pittsburgh, where he spent two days with the Pirates. The right-hander was tagged for seven runs and eight hits over 2 1/3 innings. Trailing 9-4 after six innings, the Curve began their valiant comeback attempt in the top of the sixth, when Brad Corley belted a solo home run -- his ninth of the season. Down 12-10 entering the ninth, Altoona loaded the bases with one out and cut the lead to one on a Jason Bowers RBI single. However, Erie right-hander Matt Rusch retired the next two batters to preserve a slim victory for the SeaWolves. Dorta, Corley, Steve Lerud and Luis Cruz each posted two-hit games in the game one loss. Altoona (40-54) can earn a series victory against Erie (39-57) with a win in Monday's series finale at Jerry Uht Park. The Curve will send left-hander Kyle Bloom (1-4, 4.57) to the mound for the 7:05 p.m. contest against righty Eddie Bonine, who was optioned by the Detroit Tigers over the weekend. Following Monday's game, the Curve will enjoy the two-day Eastern League All-Star Break. Boone's Blast Lifts Curve To 7-2 Win At Trenton Jul 10, 2008 James Boone belted a go-ahead, three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to propel the Altoona Curve to a 7-2 win over the first-place Trenton Thunder Wednesday evening at Waterfront Park in Trenton. The victory evens the three-game set at one game apiece after the Thunder blanked Altoona, 8-0, in Tuesday's series opener. The Curve trailed 2-0 and had managed only one hit over the first five innings against Thunder left-hander Phil Coke, but Boone, batting with Steve Lerud and Jason Bowers on base, hit a towering blast over the left-field wall to give Altoona its first lead in the series. The longball was Boone's first home run since April 21. Bowers and Jonel Pacheco delivered key two-RBI singles as part of a four-run ninth to seal the win. Left-hander Kyle Bloom (1-4) shook off a two-run Thunder first inning and turned in his best effort of the season to earn his first win. Bloom, who was winless over his first 12 starts and 18 overall outings, worked a season-high 5 2/3 innings and allowed only two runs and four hits, while striking out seven. The two runs he gave up in the first were unearned. Meanwhile, the Curve bullpen, which has struggled in recent games, turned in a strong performance to nail down just the Curve's fifth win in 17 games. Ronald Belisario retired all four batters he faced between the sixth and seventh innings and Juan Mateo worked two scoreless innings to notch his first save. Coke (7-4) was handed the loss for Trenton, allowing three runs -- all on the Boone home run -- over six innings. Jason Delaney recorded a second-inning single to extend his current team-high hitting streak to 11 games. Delaney is just one game shy of matching Brad Corley's season-long, 12-game streak, which was turned in from April 22-May 5. The Curve will complete their three-game series against Trenton Thursday evening at Waterfront Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Altoona will send right-hander Luis Munoz (1-2, 5.09) to the mound against Thunder righty Eric Hacker (4-1, 2.05). Fans can hear all the action on Real Oldies 93.5 FM and the Curve Radio Network beginning at 6:50 with the Curve GameDay Show presented by the Hotel Belmar and Budget Beverage. The game can also be heard live and for free on-line at AltoonaCurve.com. Malkin Staying Jul 03, 2008 Evgeni Malkin is staying in Pittsburgh for quite some time. The Penguins signed the MVP finalist to a five-year extension worth $43.5 million, a deal that will keep him under contract until the 2013-14 season. The 21-year-old forward still has one year left on his initial three-year, entry level contract. His deal is equal to one signed by teammate Sidney Crosby that begins with the upcoming season. Signing Malkin was key to the Penguins, who lost Marian Hossa to the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings earlier in the day. Malkin could've become a free agent after next season if he didn't have a new deal. Malkin is arguably the team's best player besides Crosby. He scored 106 points, including 47 goals, last season and was an All-Star and a finalist for the Hart Trophy, which is given to the NHL's most valuable player. The agency's executive director says construction-related earth moving should begin by the end of the month or early August. Pedro's Victorious...Saunders Gets His Ninth Jun 04, 2008 Pedro Martinez came off the disabled list to make his second 2008 start last night for the New York Mets in a 9-6 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Martinez has been sidelined for more than two months after he left his initial outing of the year April 1st with a hamstring injury. He even hit a pair of singles and drove in a run to help his cause and boost his line, which read: six innings, seven hits, three runs, three walks and three strikeouts on 109 pitches. Martinez received a standing ovation when he walked off the mound after the sixth to finish his night. ^ Adam Eaton limited the Reds to a run and three hits in six-and-two-thirds innings in a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Pat Burrell snapped a 1-1 tie with a two-run homer in the sixth as the Phillies extended their National League East lead to two-and-a-half games over Florida in the National League East. Reds outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. walked as a pinch-hitter after missing a second straight start due to what the Reds describe as general soreness. Griffey remains one shy of becoming the sixth major league player to reach the 600-home run plateau. ^ Yesterday's NL slate included the Marlins' 5-4 loss to Atlanta. Chipper Jones smacked a three-run homer and also scored on Greg Norton's two-run double, which gave the Braves a 3-and-16 record in one-run games. The Marlins wasted Dan Uggla's (UHG'-luhz) 17th and 18th homers of the season. Randy Johnson moved past Roger Clemens for second on the all-time strikeout list, but he also gave up four runs and left in the seventh inning of Arizona's 7-1 loss at Milwaukee. Ryan Braun hit a two-run homer and J.J. Hardy drove in two runs to support Seth McClung, who limited the Diamondbacks to six hits in six innings. Alfonso Soriano hit a three-run homer and Mark DeRosa added a two-run shot to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 9-6 win over the San Diego Padres for their ninth straight win. Yadier (YAH'-dee-ehr) Molina's three-run homer was part of a four-run first as St. Louis whipped Washington 6-1. Kyle Lohse (lohsh) limited the Nationals to a run and four hits in five innings. Jeff Francis outpitched longtime Rockies nemesis Brad Penny and Colorado snapped an eight-game losing streak Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 3-0 victory. Wandy Rodriguez allowed five hits over six shutout innings as Houston topped Pittsburgh 2-0. Lance Berkman and Miguel Tejada (teh-HAH'-dah) supplied RBI doubles to help Rodriguez win his second start since coming off the disabled list. In the American League, Joe Saunders allowed one earned run in seven innings to become the American League's first nine-game winner and Maicer Izturis (MAY'-sur ihz-TOOR'-ihs) drove in three runs as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 5-4. New York Yankees pitcher Joba (JAH'-bah) Chamberlain never made it out of the third inning in his first major league start. Working on a limited pitch count, Chamberlain needed 62 pitches to retire seven batters while allowing two runs on one hit and four walks in Toronto's 9-3 rout of the Yankees. The right-hander threw 38 pitches in the first inning alone. Five Yankee relievers followed after Chamberlain was taken out of the game. David Eckstein had three RBIs for the Blue Jays, who erupted for six runs in the seventh to take a 9-2 lead. Roy Halladay gave up two runs in six innings for his seventh win. ^ Also in the AL, Coco Crisp was in a 1-for-25 slump before he delivered a tiebreaking two-run double in a four-run sixth that lifted Boston past Toronto 7-4. Mike Lowell and J.D. Drew homered in the Red Sox's 11th consecutive home win. Carlos Quentin, A.J. Pierzynski (peer-ZIHN'-skee), Nick Swisher and Alexei Ramirez to power the Chicago White Sox past Kansas City 9-5. The win came two days after White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said changes could be forthcoming after losing three of four to Tampa Bay. Jack Cust's two-out, bases-loaded infield single gave Oakland a 5-4 win over Detroit in 11 innings. Radhames Liz pitched into the sixth inning in his 2008 debut, allowing two runs over five-and-a-third innings as Baltimore topped Minnesota 5-3. Kevin Millar (mih-LAHR') and Melvin Mora homered for the Orioles, who had dropped nine straight to the Twins. Josh Hamilton and Milton Bradley hit back-to-back homers in a four-run first that jumpstarted the Texas Rangers in a 13-7 rout of Cleveland. David Murphy also smacked one of the Rangers' five homers while going 4-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored. May 05, 2008 Nearly two dozen cars from two freight trains derailed in an accident in Westmoreland County, but no injuries were reported. CSX says a train was heading west from New Castle to Chicago when it jumped the track about 20 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, derailing about 10 cars. A second CSX train heading east crashed into it, derailing about a dozen cars. That train was heading from Willard, Ohio, to Cumberland. None of the 22 derailed cars overturned in the 10 a.m. accident Sunday, but one was leaking a paint additive. CSX says its workers and local firefighters were trying to prevent the substance from entering a stream near the tracks. Investigators were trying to determine the cause of the initial derailment. Nittany Lions Win Second Ever NCAA Championship May 05, 2008 Top-ranked Penn State won its first NCAA men's volleyball championship in 14 years, rallying for a 27-30, 33-31, 30-25, 30-23 victory over second-ranked Pepperdine on Saturday night. "This replaces the 1972 Derry (Pa.) Little League championship for me," Nittany Lions coach Mark Pavlik said of his first NCAA title. "The strength this team had was singularity of purpose. They certainly played much better than I can coach. "I think the standard has been set, certainly in our gym, and we're going to find a way to try to surpass that next year." Matt Anderson had 29 kills for the Nittany Lions (30-1), who beat UCLA in 1994 for their last NCAA men's volleyball title. Anderson, the national co-player of the year, was selected the NCAA tournament's most valuable player. "I'm awestruck with what just happened," Anderson said. "One of our attributes was our ability to fight in circumstances a lot of teams can't even deal with. We've faced deficits of eight, nine points and come back to win games." Teammate Luke Murray added a career-high 12 digs, tied a season best with 63 assists and had nine block assists. Max Lipsitz had 17 kills, and Max Holt added 12 kills, nine block assists and two service aces. Penn State also became the second school to win NCAA men's and women's titles in the same academic year. Stanford accomplished the feat in 1997. Paul Carroll had 35 kills, eight digs and three aces for the Waves (17-11). J.D. Schleppenbach added 15 kills and four block assists, and Jonathan Winder passed for 60 assists. Winder said that Penn State relied on its serving to make his teammates vulnerable to attacks at the middle of the net. "Their serving was really good and it knocked us off the net," Winder said. "We didn't have success early and throughout the season, our middle blockers had to be good early." The Nittany Lions lost the first game after taking a 15-7 lead, then saw Pepperdine rally from a 20-16 deficit for a 30-29 advantage in the second game. But with the score tied at 31, Ryan Sweitzer punched a kill and Anderson converted a tip for the win. In the third game, Penn State used an 11-6 surge to take a 23-18 lead. Sweitzer had three kills and Holt added two in the run. The Nittany Lions took leads of 6-0 and 9-2 in the fourth game. It was only Johnstown's second tally on the power play all series. The Chiefs went 2-for-33 with the man-advantage throughout the four game set. The Cyclones led 2-0 at the end of the first period. Thomas Beauregard gave Cincinnati a 3-0 lead just over five minutes into the second before Johnstown's comeback attempt. But so far in this series, they haven't matched the Penguins' deep, multiple-line scoring. Evgeni Malkin has a goal and five assists, Sidney Crosby has four assists and Petr Sykora has three goals. Pirates Apr 14, 2008 The Pittsburgh Pirates powered their way past visiting Cincinnati 9-1. Ryan Doumit, Xavier Nady and Jason Bay homered to help the Bucs complete a three-game sweep of the Reds. Tom Gorzelanny bounced back from one of his worst career starts to outpitch Cincinnati rookie Johnny Cueto. Gorzelanny was coming off the shortest of his 47 career starts, a no-decision Monday when he allowed seven runs in two and a-third innings of the Pirates' home opener against the Cubs. He limited the Reds to one run and four hits despite walking four over six and a-third innings and is 1-and-1 on the year. After outstanding performances in his first two starts, during which he struck out 18 and didn't walk a batter, Cueto wasn't as sharp this time out. He gave up five runs and five hits in six innings. Penn State was among the campuses planned for part of the ``Gridiron Bash,'' which was to start this week and bring in at least $15 million. Now questions are swirling about who's to blame. The producer, New York-based MSL Sports & Entertainment, faulted a late rules interpretation by the NCAA for forcing a postponement of the show. The NCAA said its only concern over the event was the participation of players. It denied asking the company to stop the shows. MSL Sports, which announced the postponement of the shows over the weekend, said the shows wouldn't work without participation by the teams. Penguins Win Mar 31, 2008 Sidney Crosby set up goals by Marian Hossa and Evgeni Malkin as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the visiting New York Rangers 3-1 Sunday. The Penguins, playing at close to full strength for the first time in weeks, moved into first place in the Eastern Conference with the win. Pittburgh's Marc-Andre Fleury played another excellent game in net, turning aside 26 shots. The Rangers missed an opportunity to move into fifth place in the conference. They controlled much of the play for the final two periods, but couldn't score in the final 56 minutes. Fleury has won his last seven games. The Penguins and Rangers face each other again tonight in New York. Trout Season Mar 31, 2008 Trout season is open in 18 counties in southeastern Pennsylvania. This Saturday, the Johnstown Chiefs will welcome Danny Oberst as their Guest of Honor for their game against the Cincinnati Cyclones. Chiefs fans will also have an opportunity to meet Danny and get his autograph during a special post-game autograph session. Oberst, a 16-year-old with Down syndrome, came off the bench in a ninth-grade game in early February between Westmont and Bishop Carroll, and scored a bucket in the Westmont win. Danny’s mother Patty, his coach Ron Flick, his teammates, and the Bishop Carroll team all worked to get Danny in the game, and he did not disappoint. But it was Danny’s brother Mike, a Slippery Rock University grad student and an intern with the Chiefs, who gave the story the legs it would need to get to ESPN. Mike, Westmont Assistant Principal Tom Mitchell, and Danny’s teacher Heather Molnarko each wrote a letter to ESPN to suggest airing a feature on Danny. This was in late February, and Mike was a little skeptical about the results at first. “I didn’t hear anything for a week or two, and I thought it would blow over,” Danny’s oldest brother said. But it didn’t blow over and ESPN came calling. Pete McConville, a producer for ESPN’s ‘First Take’ called last Friday with the news that the program wanted to air Danny’s story. An interview with Danny and Mike Oberst, and Mitchell was taped in Pittsburgh last Tuesday morning and aired twice that afternoon. As would be expected, the story brought a ton of attention to Danny and his brother. “My phone was off the hook on Tuesday, and I went to the bank yesterday and everyone was like, ‘Are you the brother,’” Mike said. As for Danny, Mike said, “He hasn’t gotten any mail or anything like that yet, but we’re expecting it’ll start coming in over the next couple days, but everyone at school has been great. I don’t think he thought it would get this big.” And even though Danny’s favorite sport is basketball, hockey isn’t very far behind, and Mike would know. “We watch as many Penguins games together as we can, and with me working for the Chiefs he’s always telling me to get him good tickets,” Mike said. As the Guest of Honor this Saturday, good seats won’t be something Danny has to worry about. In fact, he’ll get closer to the action than any other fan that night. Danny will come down to ice level and drop the ceremonial opening faceoff at center ice before taking in the action between the Chiefs and Cincinnati Cyclones. The Chiefs beat Cincinnati on home ice last Friday in one of the most exciting victories of the season. Johnstown used a 1-0 shootout victory to cap a 4-3 win, and Ryan Nie tied a team record with his 25th win of the season. With the Cyclones looming as a potential second round opponent in the playoffs, the Chiefs will look to set the tone for that series with a great effort on Saturday. That game will also feature the final Dodge Shootout of the season. You could be the lucky fan to come down to ice level, and shoot for a brand new Dodge vehicle! Great seats are still available for Saturday’s game, and you can get yours by calling the War Memorial Box Office at 814-536-5156 or by going to www.johnstownchiefs.com. Sid is Back! Mar 28, 2008 Jarkko Ruutu had a goal and two assists and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the New York Islanders 3-1 in Sidney Crosby's first home game in more than two months. Crosby, who had suffered a high ankle sprain, took three shots but didn't score. Georges Laraque had a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh. Evgeni Malkin also scored as the Penguins won their sixth consecutive home game and seventh of nine overall. They lead the Atlantic Division by six points. Josef Vasicek had the lone goal for the Islanders, who lost for the eighth time in 10 games. He said his sprained right ankle feels better than it has in some time but that he isn't in game condition yet. Crosby's injured ankle has forced him to miss six straight games and 27 of 30. Although he wasn't ready to play Monday versus the also-ran Islanders, the Penguins captain wouldn't say if he would also sit out Tuesday at New Jersey in a key game against the Devils. Olympic Torch Mar 24, 2008 The Olympic Torch has been lit in Greece at the start of a circuitous, 85,000-mile journey to Beijing for the summer Olympics. This morning's lighting ceremony on a field at Ancient Olympia was marred by a small protest. Two men from the group Reporters Without Borders darted out carrying a black flag with the image of handcuffs forming the Olympic rings. They were quickly corralled by police. The Paris-based journalism advocacy group says three of its members were able to get into the ceremony without being stopped, even though more than 1,000 Greek police were there for security. China has vowed there will be strict security to protect the torch relay, particularly in light of all the protests over China's deadly crackdown on Tibet protests. Activists are upset over China's plans to take the torch through Tibet and even to the top of Mount Everest along the border between Tibet and Nepal. China is already barring mountaineers from the Tibetan side of the mountain. WVU head coach Bill Stewart says he will take appropriate action once all the facts are in. 2/6 LOCAL SPORTS SCORES Feb 06, 2008 TUESDAY'S SCORES Boys Basketball Central Cambria 60, Bishop Guilfoyle 44* Cambria Heights 68, Forest Hills 52 Berlin 61, Portage 56 Ligonier Valley 47, Laurel Valley 42 United 49, Northern Cambria 46 Elk C.C. 44, Punxsutawney 36 State College 52, Hollidaysburg 40 Girls Basketball Windber 54, Portage 33 Berlin 65, Salisbury 33 High School Wrestling Forest Hills 33, Ridgway 30* Penn Cambria 46, Richland 25 1/4 LOCAL SPORTS SCORES Feb 05, 2008 MONDAY'S SCORES Boys Basketball Conemaugh Twp. 71, Portage 42 Shade 54, Berlin 38 North Star 64, Blacklick Valley 46 Conemaugh Valley 38, Windber 35 Shanksville 54, Meyersdale 36 Ferndale 60, Johnstown Christian 45 Richland 60, Chestnut Ridge 38 Penn Cambria 54, Forest Hills 44 Central Cambria 77, Bedford 49 Westmont 66, Hollidaysburg 37 Cambria Heights 68, Williamsburg 49 Elk C.C. 48, Kane 37 Girls Basketball North Star 54, Blacklick Valley 24* Johnstown 51, Somerset 34 Laurel Valley 49, Rockwood 44 Penn Cambria 51, Johnstown Christian 39 Williamsburg 49, Tyrone 39 Men's College Basketball UPJ 85, Glenville St. 80 Women's College Basketball Glenville St. 82, UPJ 62 Quinnipiac 65, St. Francis 58 High School Wrestling Shade 42, Berlin 21 DISTRICT 6 BASKETBALL SEEDINGS AND PAIRINGS Feb 04, 2008 A BOYS 1) Saltsburg (Bye) 2) Bishop Guilfoyle (Bye) 3) Harmony (Bye) 4) Williamsburg vs. 13) Belleville Mennonite 5) Homer Center vs. 12) Conemaugh Valley 6) Glendale vs. 11) Blacklick Valley 7) Laurel Valley vs. 10) Penns Manor 8) Bishop Carroll vs. 9) Northern Cambria A GIRLS 1) Bishop Guilfoyle (Bye) 2) Penns Manor (Bye) 3) Williamsburg (Bye) 4) Ferndale (Bye) 5) Harmony vs. 12) Conemaugh Valley 6) Belleville Mennonite vs. 11) Blairsville 7) Saltsburg vs. 10) West Branch 8) Bishop Carroll vs. 9) Moshannon Valley AA BOYS 1) Tyrone (Bye) 2) Bishop McCort (Bye) 3) Cambria Heights (Bye) 4) West Branch (Bye) 5) Penns Valley vs. 12) Richland 6) Philipsburg-Osceola vs. 11) Central Martinsburg 7) Blairsville vs. 10) Westmont 8) United vs. 9) Bellwood-Antis AA GIRLS 1) Bishop McCort (Bye) 2) Northern Cambria (Bye) 3) Southern Huntingdon vs. 6) Marion Center 4) Penns Valley vs. 5) Central Cambria 8) Central Martinsburg vs. 9) Cambria Heights AAA BOYS 1) Central Cambria (Bye) 2) Somerset (Bye) 3) Huntingdon vs. 6) Johnstown 4) Indian Valley vs. 5) Lewistown AAA GIRLS 1) Lewistown (Bye) 2) Bellefonte vs. 3) Forest Hills 4) Indian Valley vs. 5) Huntingdon ***ALL FIRST ROUND GAMES PLAYED MONDAY, FEBRUARY 11. Huntingdon 44, Everett 29 PATRIOTS, GIANTS WILL BATTLE AT SUPER BOWL Jan 21, 2008 NFC Championship: New York Giants 23, Green Bay 20 The New York Giants defeated the Green Bay Packers 23-20 in overtime in the chilly NFC championship at Lambeau Field on Sunday, when the game-time temperature was about zero degrees with a wind chill of minus-23. With the victory, the Giants advanced to the Super Bowl, where they will face the undefeated New England Patriots. Packers quarterback Brett Favre was 19-of-35 for 236 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. For the Giants, Eli Manning was 21-of-40 for 254 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. Manning's main target was Plaxico Burress, who recorded 154 receiving yards. The Giants got on the board first when Lawrence Tynes connected on a 29-yard field goal with just under five minutes left to play in the first quarter. New York extended its lead to 6-0 early in the second quarter with another field goal by Tynes, this one from 37 yards. The Packers then answered right back with a big play from Donald Driver, who connected with Favre for a 90-yard touchdown reception to take a 7-6 lead. It marked the longest play in Green Bay's postseason history. Green Bay extended its lead to 10-6 when Mason Crosby connected on a 36-yard field goal late in the second quarter. The Giants struck back in the third quarter with a touchdown after Brandon Jacobs scored on a 1-yard run to take a 13-10 advantage. But New York's lead didn't last long as Donald Lee caught a 12-yard pass from Favre to put the Packers back in front 17-13. New York jumped back into the lead late in the third when Ahmad Bradshaw scored on a 4-yard run to put the Giants ahead 20-17. The Packers tied the game at 20-20 with a field goal early in the fourth quarter. The Giants had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but there was a high snap on the field-goal attempt that threw off Tynes' timing and caused the kick to go wide. The Packers won the coin toss to start the extra session, but their possession was quickly ended when Favre's passing attempt was picked off. The turnover set up another field-goal attempt for the Giants. That time Tynes was good on the attempt, nailing a 47-yard kick to win the game 23-20. AFC Championship: New England 21, San Diego 12 The New England Patriots stayed perfect, even if their quarterback wasn't. The Patriots improved to 18-0 on the season with a 21-12 victory over the San Diego Chargers in Sunday's AFC championship game. The Patriots will face the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII on Feb. 3, when they will try to become the first team since the 1972 Miami Dolphins to finish an entire NFL season undefeated. New England quarterback Tom Brady struggled in Sunday's victory, throwing three interceptions in the outing, including one in the red zone. The passer -- who was named the league's Most Valuable Player this season -- also added 209 yards and two touchdowns. His counterpart, San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers, was 19-of-37 for 211 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. Rivers started Sunday's game despite suffering a sprained knee against the Indianapolis Colts in the divisional playoffs last weekend. Running back LaDainian Tomlinson (hyperextended left knee) saw limited action Sunday, as did Antonio Gates (dislocated toe). San Diego got the first big break of the game with an early interception after Brady was picked off by Quentin Jammer with a little more than five minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Chargers took advantage of the turnover and jumped out to a 3-0 lead when kicker Nate Kaeding connected on a 26-yard field goal attempt. But New England didn't stay scoreless for long. The Patriots opened the second quarter with a touchdown when Laurence Maroney ran for the 1-yard score to put New England ahead 7-3. The TD marked Brady's 14th consecutive playoff game with a touchdown pass, second in NFL history only to Green Bay's Brett Favre. San Diego cut the deficit to 7-6 when Kaeding connected on another field goal, this one from 23 yards out. The Chargers turned the ball over on their next possession when New England's Asante Samuel picked off Rivers' pass that was intended for receiver Chris Chambers. The Patriots' offense took advantage of the turnover, scoring a touchdown when Brady connected with Jabar Gaffney on a 12-yard pass for a 14-6 lead. San Diego trimmed New England's lead to 14-9 at the half when Kaeding connected on a 40-yard field goal attempt late in the second quarter. The Chargers made the game even closer early in the third quarter when Kaeding was good on a 24-yard field goal attempt to bring San Diego to within 14-12. The Patriots threatened to score with less than four minutes remaining in the third quarter, but facing third-and-goal, Brady threw his third interception of the game to end the drive and give the ball back to San Diego. But New England got its offense back on track in the beginning of the fourth quarter, as Brady connected with Wes Welker on a 6-yard pass for a touchdown and a two-score lead at 21-12. FORMER STEELER DIES IN CRASH Jan 21, 2008 A Pittsburgh Steelers legend and original member of the Steel Curtain died in a car crash near Lumberton, Texas, Thursday night. Ernie Holmes, 59, who lived in the small community of Wiergate as an ordained minister, was most famous for his years with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1972 to 1977. Holmes played as a defensive lineman. Officials told KBTV that Holmes was driving southbound on Highway 69 near Colonial Drive in Hardin County, when his car left the roadway and rolled over several times. Holmes was ejected and pronounced dead on at the scene. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Holmes won two Super Bowl rings with the Steelers, in Super Bowl IX and Super Bowl X. He recorded 39 1/2 sacks during his career with the Steelers. Holmes, nicknamed "Fats," was also famous for shaving his head in the shape of an arrow early in his career. He was released after the 1977 season. In a written statement, Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney said: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and untimely death of Ernie Holmes. Ernie was one of the toughest players to ever wear a Steelers uniform. He was a key member of our famous Steel Curtain defense, and many people who played against him considered Ernie almost impossible to block. At his best, he was an intimidating player who even the toughest of opponents did not want to play against. Ernie seemed to be doing well in recent years and was always one of our most popular players whenever he returned to Pittsburgh for team events. Our prayers go out to Ernie's family and loved ones. He will be missed by the entire Steelers family."
