Couple Facing Felony Charges

A Blair county couple is facingfelony charges after they severely beat a 9-year-old boy for eating Danish pastries, according to an affidavit. police say officers were called to UPMC Altoona Monday regarding the case of suspected child abuse. The boy was taken to the hospital by his father, who noticed severe bruising on the boy's face, hip and buttocks that included open wounds. The father told police he had picked up his son from the home of 24-year-old Kristen Kennedy and 30-year-old Joshua Bennett on North 7th Avenue after receiving a call that they were no longer able to care for the boy, according to police. In an interview with police, the boy said Bennett had beat him after he ate some Danish pastries that had been left on the counter in the kitchen. Police say the boy explained that Kennedy then hit him with a spatula. When police interviewed Kennedy, she told officers that she was responsible for the wounds on the child's buttocks and that they were caused with a spatula after the boy ate several Danishes after they had just finished dinner, according to the affidavit. Police also interviewed Bennett, who they say admitted to striking the boy in the face and on the hip after he said the boy took several pastries and other food items and then lied about it. The couple are facing several charges, including felony endangering the welfare of children.
