An Altoona man has been charged after knocking on doors in the middle of the night with a hunting rifle slung over his shoulder, police say. According to police, 31-year-old Joseph Sweeney Jr. knocked on the door of a home on Deer Lane early Tuesday just before 2:30 a.m. The homeowner told police that Sweeney said his father had been shot before running away. The homeowner did not actually see Sweeney during their interaction and could only hear his voice.Police say the homeowner called 911, and while he was on the phone with emergency dispatchers, he heard a gunshot. According to police, Sweeney was captured on a second homeowner's surveillance camera the same night. Police say the video showed Sweeney with a hunting rifle, coming down the hill from the first house and then ringing the homeowner's doorbell while waiting on the porch. When no one answered the door, police say Sweeney continued to run down a hill toward Park Forest Lane and fired a random shot with the hunting rifle for an unknown reason. Sweeney has been charged with recklessly endangering, loitering and prowling at night, disorderly conduct and person not to possess a firearm.
