The Pennsylvania Board of Pharmacy temporarily suspended the pharmacy license for well-known local pharmacist Joseph Martella, owner of the Martella's Pharmacies chain, after he was indicted in federal court on narcotics distribution charges last week. The board said the temporary suspension was necessary because, if the federal indictment is true, Martella is an "immediate and clear danger to the public health and safety," according to a suspension order. The board plans to hold a preliminary hearing within 30 days to decide whether to continue the temporary suspension until a decision can be made whether to permanently suspend the license. In the meantime, a prosecuting attorney will move forward on "a separate action to suspend, revoke or other restrict Martella's license." Martella pleaded not guilty to the federal charges last week.
