Steel Tariffs

Last week the President announced plans to tax steel and aluminum imported into the U.S., But there is debate in the Country and in this area on whether it would be good or bad for workers and businesses in our area. The idea behind a tariff on steel and aluminum coming into this Country is to make it fair, countries like China cheat on trade practices and a University of Pittsburgh economist says steel manufacturing in western pa has changed a lot over the years. It is not clear if taxing steel and aluminum from all other countries including Canada and Mexico would be good for American businesses, Brian Young is a Purchasing Manager in Somerset County and he says they will be affected in the short term but companies who do not buy enough steel in advance could be. It is not clear how this will resolve, Congress has been given Power of Tariffs but they usually delegate that to the President so if Congress wants to block the tariffs the President could Veto it meaning it would take Republicans and Democrats in the House and the Senate to overrule him.
