A well known, longtime Johnstown leader passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday. Susan Shahade had a colossal impact on the Johnstown community and beyond, working as the executive director of the Women's Help Center in both Cambria and Somerset counties. "She literally, almost up until her dying day, gave to this movement" Shahade worked there for 37 years, where many said her role was an instrumental part of the center's growth. "She took a very small program and literally grew it by leaps and bounds." Thomas worked with Shahade for 17 years. "She had an awesome sense of humor. She had nicknames for all of us. Almost never called me Artyce ... almost always Artemis. When I would walk into the room she would sing it "Hi Artemis, how are you today, She'd make up a little song. That's what I'll miss the most." Shahade was described as vibrant, passionate and sophisticated. She dedicated her life to helping others. "It was so important to her that woman and children locally, and victims of domestic violence at large, had a dignified place to lay their heads. She meant that." Shahade was also deeply involved at the St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church. Very Rev. Fr. Donald E. Shadid said Shahade became involved in the church at 13 years old. "She was a very caring and loving person, whose service to others was founded on her love for God." She was involved on both local and regional levels as part of the Society of Orthodox Youth Organizations.
