A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Jefferson County Wednesday for a veterans memorial. The memorial will be built on a piece of land donated by the Furlong Funeral Home, located along broad street in Summerville. The idea came after Colleen Cooney was part of a group working on a book about Summerville. Cooney was assigned the history chapter. The memorial will consist of a brick area with veterans names, surrounded by cement walks. It'll also include a monument with emblems of all the armed forces. As a Summerville native and Vietnam veteran, president of the memorial committee. "I knew guys from Korea that were killed in action It's very special to me and very meaningful that they have this for the people in this town. The committee hopes to have the memorial completed by Memorial Day 2018. Sweitzer said there are 1,000 bricks available to be inscribed for $100 each.
